His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

Voxê é um botão de rosa
Que perfuma e dá a flor mostrando a vida
Como é bonito o amor
Gabriela
Gabriela como voxê é bela
Voxê é uma nota musical
Adorada
Gabriela como voxê é bela
Voxê que é tão singela
Tão pura, tão linda e sincera
Gabriela, querida
Voxê é o amor da minha vida, a, a, a
Gabriela, a, a, a
Essa menina é um amor bonito
Ela é cravo e canela
E o seu nome é Gabriela
E eu amo viu voxê
E só voxê Gabriela
E eu amo viu voxê
The lyrics to Jorge Ben's song Gabriela describe a woman named Gabriela, whom the singer finds incredibly beautiful and pure, comparing her to a rose that perfumes and displays its beauty, as well as a musical note that is awaited and desired. The chorus repeats the refrain "Gabriela como voxê é bela" (Gabriela, how beautiful you are) multiple times, emphasizing the singer's admiration for this woman.
The song sings of the singer's love for Gabriela, calling her "cravo e canela" (clove and cinnamon), which are two spices often used together to describe something that is pleasing to the senses. He expresses that she is the love of his life, using the repetition of the vowel sound "a" to emphasize his emotions. The song ends with the singer repeating how much he loves Gabriela and that she is the only one for him.
Overall, the lyrics to Gabriela are a tribute to a woman who exemplifies beauty, love, and purity. The singer's admiration for her is clear throughout the song, and he expresses his love and devotion to her in the chorus and the final lines.
