Prior to being a recording artist, he was a record store owner and a club DJ at a nightclub in Salt Lake City as a way to make ends meet for him and his wife. After he and his wife moved to San Francisco he landed a job as a A&R man at OM records, where in addition to reviewing demos for the label he also submitted his own material, which would pay off big time for him. In 2001 he went from behind the desk to behind the turntables and the recording studio as an artist in his own right. In 2003 Kaskade released his first album, "It's You It's Me", which was well received by critics.
It would be his follow up, "In The Moment" in 2004, that would put Kaskade on the map. The first single off the set "Steppin' Out" would become a major hit on the Dance Radio Airplay that year as well as a top 10 hit on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. His biggest breakthrough would come the week of May 14, 2005, when his follow up, "Everything," would go all the way to #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
Breaking Up
Kaskade Lyrics

I'm hoping that you would break it
To receive means more if you don't have
I will never know what you'd say
If I asked you not to run away
'Cause leaving doesn't seem so sad if you don't go
Am I breaking up? Am I breaking up?
What if nothing came between us?
How could anything complete us?
'Cause emptiness is such a bore
When you don't have
Am I breaking up? Am I breaking up?
Am I breaking up? Am I breaking up?
Am I breaking up? Am I breaking up?
Am I breaking up? Am I breaking up?
The lyrics of Kaskade feat. Scott Shepard's song "Breaking Up" are a reflection on the complexities of relationships and the fear of complacency. The singer is worried that if things remain the same, they would become bored and disinterested in their partner. As a solution, the singer is asking their partner to give them a reason to break their heart, to make them feel something, to keep the spark alive. They are also questioning the significance of their relationship and whether they can truly feel complete without any obstacles or challenges.
The chorus of the song repeats the question "Am I breaking up?," which can be interpreted in different ways. It could be asking whether the relationship is coming to an end, or it could be an introspective question of whether the singer is breaking up internally. It could also be a plea for the partner to break their heart, to make them feel something, which could ultimately save the relationship.
The song touches upon the idea that sometimes it takes a break or a shock to reignite the passion in a relationship, and that the emptiness and boredom that can come from being too comfortable can ultimately lead to a breakup. Overall, the lyrics of "Breaking Up" are thought-provoking and encourage introspection about the nature of relationships.
