promise
Kaskade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walked around this empty town
3 am and no one around
All the shops are closed and I'm close to passing out
Got a place I oughtta be
And someone who's missing me
But my mind, no, my mind can't get out

I know I'm not supposed to say it
I know I'm not supposed to think
But I got it bad, bad, bad
I know I'm not supposed to say it
I know we can't ever be
But I want it bad, bad, bad

Promise when you're with her that you're picturing me
That it's all you can do
That I'm all you can see
Promise when I'm with him that I'm picturing you
And when you're loving her
Promise that you're loving me, too

Promise, oh, promise that you're loving me, too
Promise that you're loving me, too
Promise, oh, promise that you're loving me, too
Promise that you're loving me, too
Promise that you're loving me, too
Promise, oh

On the night that we both me
Painted eyes and silhouettes
I said "Hi," you said "Let's go inside instead"
How could something feel so right?
When it met, we had to lie
All I got now is this pounding in my chest

I know I'm not supposed to say it
I know I'm not supposed to think
But I got it bad, bad, bad
I know I'm not supposed to say it
I know we can't ever be
But I want it bad, bad, bad

Promise when you're with her that you're picturing me
That it's all you can do
That I'm all you can see
Promise when I'm with him that I'm picturing you
And when you're loving her
Promise that you're loving me, too

Promise, oh, promise that you're loving me, too
Promise that you're loving me, too
Promise, oh, promise that you're loving me, too
Promise that you're loving me, too
Promise that you're loving me, too
Promise, oh

Promise, oh

Promise, oh
Promise, oh

Overall Meaning

In the song "Promise" by Kaskade, the singer is walking around an empty town late at night. All the shops are closed, and there seems to be no one around. Despite having somewhere to go and someone who's missing them, their mind can't get out of a particular thought. They are fully aware that they're not supposed to think or say it, but the feeling is bad, bad, bad. It's a sense of yearning for someone who they can't have, who they can't even admit they want. The singer is aware that nothing can ever come out of their desire, but they still want it badly.

The chorus "Promise when you're with her that you're picturing me" is the most memorable part of the song. It's like the singer is asking the other person to keep the thought of them alive, to remember them even when they're with someone else, and to promise that they're loving them too. The idea of yearning for someone you can't be with is not a new concept, but the way Kaskade uses it in the song is nonetheless compelling. The song is about the tension that comes from wanting something but knowing it can't happen.

K flay is making some incredible music right now and I am a huge fan and feel really lucky to have worked with her. I once shared a plate of nachos with her but I ended up eating all of them and she just watched me… so I guess I can’t say I β€œshared”. More like - "she watched me eat nachos once”. Either way she is amazing and I am stoked to have her on my album. This is one of my favorites on the record.

It's a nice song but it seems kind of dry and simple. A repetitive beat with the beat not really complementing her voices tone or timing. Would be better with some creative melodies which adds energy to the song and how it feels to listen to. That's my feedback.

I saw k flay live about 7 years ago on a college campus. She had a synth, some modulators and a mic. She would create a beat, loop it, then rap over it.

Though I don't necessarily advocate the motive of these lyrics, the vocal presence and the beat of this song are just too damn sexy to resist!
