Formed in 1976, they have toured extensively through North America and Europe. As well as the traditional accordion, fiddle, guitar, piano and double bass, the band added a four-piece horn section in 1990 which gives an element of jazz to the music. In 1998, they contributed a song to the Canadian Celtic music compilation by The Chieftains, Fire in the Kitchen.
The group's name means "the smiling boot", which refers to the appearance of a work boot with worn-out soles.
They have received three Canadian Juno awards and several Felix awards from the Quebec recording industry. They are known for their high energy live performances and in 2000 were voted Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. BBC Radio 3 has also played their music in mainstream programmes.

The song Pinci Pincette by the Quebecois band La Bottine Souriante tells the story of Pinci-Pincette, who want to get married but have nothing to eat. As they bemoan their lack of provisions, a series of unlikely events result in them acquiring all the food they need. First, a large dog approaches them with a loaf of bread on its back, which they happily accept. Then a mouse comes with a barrel that seems to contain wine, but when they open it they find it filled with small pieces of wood (“baril” can be a slang term for wood chips). Next, a fox appears carrying a quarter of fat, but they note that they have no bacon to go with it. A procession of strange animals then descend upon the pair, including a caterpillar carrying 14 beautiful women on its back, a camel with 14 boys on each hump, and a rat playing a violin. Finally, their cat leaps upon the rat and sends it fleeing, but not before they invite a neighbor named Olivier to come and share their surprisingly abundant feast.
