The pages turn, the books still burn
Can't stop the bomb, can't avoid the descent
They all want to go and that's all we know
So throw me out of the fucking picture
So sorry about you and your single-serving crew
Playing by ear is how I've learned that no one cares at all
Anymore
Distracted, misinformed, mislead
To serve the machine
Sensory self-mutilated trip
Into captivity
Out with the old, bring the new guns in
Sick of the drugs that keep you thin
Been hanging on the telephone way too long
Just let it go
Just hang up
Hang up - separate yourself from the noise
Hang up - do it now before we're all destroyed
Hang up - just lose that unbelieveable shine
Hang up - return-to-sender, your mail-order bride
Beat the meat into submission
Nothing left alive at all to take
Wasted blood, infect transfusion
So much trash, our claim to stake
Little troop, don't fail me now
Kill off the one my TV hates
Winning team, now take a bow
Your useless adventure's far too great
Remorseless perverts with your obscenity
Fill me up, tie me up, tear me down
The lyrics of Left Spine Down's "Hang Up" are about the end of something good and the inevitability of change. The song speaks about the fleeting nature of our lives and how everything must come to an end, whether we like it or not. The opening lines, "all good things must come to an end, the pages turn, the books still burn" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The line "can't stop the bomb, can't avoid the descent" highlights the sense of helplessness that one can feel in the face of change, implying that we must accept it and move on.
The song also touches on themes of isolation and a disconnect from reality. The lines "playing by ear is how I've learned that no one cares at all, anymore" suggests a feeling of disillusionment with society and its values. The author implies that playing by ear is the only way to survive in a world where no one seems to care, indicating a sense of detachment from reality. The phrase "distracted, misinformed, mislead, to serve the machine" speaks to the idea that society is brainwashed by the media and the government, leading to a lack of critical thinking.
The chorus of the song speaks to the notion of taking control of one's life and removing oneself from the noise and chaos of the world - "hang up - separate yourself from the noise, hang up - do it now before we're all destroyed." The line "Beat the meat into submission" is a metaphor for taking control of oneself and not letting external forces dictate one's life. The phrase "remorseless perverts with your obscenity, fill me up, tie me up, tear me down" can be interpreted as a commentary on modern society's obsession with sex and pornography.
