Dans les gares
Les Blérots de R.A.V.E.L Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

C'est presque l'automne
Les enfant moissonnent
Et j'ai déjà
Rentré le bois
Toi, en uniforme
Avec d'autres hommes,
Très loin d'ici
Tu es parti
Toi qui chantais

Dans le soleil et dans le vent
Tournant les ailes du vieux moulin
Elles tourneront aussi longtemps
Que nous vivrons main dans la main

Un peu de poussière
Sur la tabatière
Me prouve bien
Que tu es loin
Mais, je crois entendre
Le refrain si tendre
Que l'an dernier
Pour me bercer
Tu me chantais

Dans le soleil et dans le vent
Tournant les ailes du vieux moulin
Elles tourneront aussi longtemps
Que nous vivrons main dans la main

Ton ami hier
Est rentré de guerre,
Il n'a rien dit
Mais j'ai compris
En voyant ta chaîne
Ton blouson de laine
Que plus jamais
Tu ne viendrais
Me rechanter.

Dans le soleil et dans le vent
Tournant les ailes du vieux moulin
Elles tourneront aussi longtemps
Que nous vivrons main dans la main

Tournent les ailes dans la lumière
Tourne le temps rien n'a changé

Mais dans mon cœur, depuis hier
Le vieux moulin s'est arrêté

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Les Blérots de R.A.V.E.L's song "Dans les gares" tell the story of a woman who is left behind as her partner goes off to war. It is almost autumn, and the children are harvesting while she has already gathered wood for the winter. Her partner has gone, in uniform, with other men, far away from here. He used to sing to her in the sun and wind while turning the blades of the old windmill, and this memory remains with her even as she thinks he may never return. She hears the tender refrain he sang to her last year to lull her to sleep, and it brings her comfort as she realizes he may never sing to her again.

The song takes a somber turn as she finds out her partner's friend has returned from the war, but her partner has not. She sees reminders of him, such as his chain and wool jacket, and realizes he may never return to sing to her again. The old windmill continues to turn in the light while time passes and nothing changes, but her heart has stopped since yesterday when she learned her partner may never return.

The lyrics of "Dans les gares" evoke a sense of longing and loss as the woman faces the reality of her partner's possible death while still holding onto memories of their time together. The song's use of imagery, particularly the windmill turning in the sun and wind, adds to the melancholic tone of the piece.
