The song "Le Prisonnier De La Tour" by Les Compagnons De La Chanson tells a heartbreaking story of a woman named Isabelle who has lost her lover, the prisoner of the tower, to suicide by jumping. The tone of the song is melancholy and the lyrics imbued with sorrow, as Isabelle expresses her grief and her feelings of hopelessness. The song opens with the news of the prisoner's death and the line "Le Prisonnier De La Tour s'est tué ce matin" ("The prisoner of the tower killed himself this morning"), which sets the tone for the rest of the song. Isabelle is devastated by the loss of her friend and lover, and it becomes clear that she had hoped to escape with him from their bleak existence.
The second stanza focuses on Isabelle's relationship with the prisoner and how much he meant to her. She mentions that he was her only friend and love, the reason for her existence, and that her youth has been extinguished with his death. In the final verse, Isabelle mourns the fact that the prisoner will have no burial shroud and that his final resting place is a dark hole where leaves blow in. However, she vows to keep coming to the tower to grieve beneath the linden trees, and nothing, not even the king, will stop her. The final line of the song reveals that Isabelle was the beautiful woman whom the prisoner loved and that their love was not meant for a king.
Overall, the song is a lament for the loss of love, friendship, and hope. It shows the cruelty of the world and the fact that sometimes, tragedy can strike without warning, leaving us with nothing but memories and regrets.
