Bandit & A Heart Breaker
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

One time I trusted a stranger
Cause I heard his sweet song
And it was gently enticing me
Though there was something wrong
And when I turned
He was gone
Blinding me, his song remained
Reminding me
He's a bandit and a heartbreaker
A bandit and a heartbreaker
Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

He wages war with the devil
A pistol by his side
And though he chases him out windows
And won't give him a place to hide
He keeps his door open wide
Blinding him, he lights a lamp
Inviting him
He's a bandit and a heartbreaker
A bandit and a heartbreaker
Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

One time I trusted a stranger
Cause I heard his sweet song
And it was gently enticing me
Though there was something wrong
And when I turned
He was gone
Blinding me, his song remained
Reminding me
He's a bandit and a heartbreaker
A bandit and a heartbreaker
A bandit and a heartbreaker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

I heard Linda sing this in a concert in a small theater in Connecticut. Loved it right from the start

@matthewjones1959

Cass Elliot also cut a version of this. So did Warren Zevon. In my mind, though, no one gets it right. Perhaps I'm just biased, but Judee's interpretation is the definitive one for me, though I ADORE Linda. So no shade to her at all. This is just a tough song to sing.

The words are haunting and so beautiful....

@Ethergirl

This is actually a Judee Sill song called "Jesus was Cross Maker". The lyrics here are identical except in the original after the "Bandit and a heartbreaker" line she sings "Oh but Jesus was a cross maker". I guess Linda's people thought this change would make it more mainstream and commercial? It's not really a religious song, though. I love the song and Judee's version of it, and was thinking the Linda Ronstadt ( whom I'm a big fan of) could really do it justice with a cover and I googled and found this version. Ironically the song is about JD Souther who broke Judee's heart when he dumped her for Linda. ( Judee and Linda were friends, Judee invited Linda over to a party at her house, where she met JD and that was that.)

@MAB_Audio_Nut

Yes and Linda had invited Judee to work with her on this recording and do backing vocals. Linda said Judee showed up on drugs again of some sort and nodding off. So this recording really never got finished the way she intended it so it was shelved for years. She also wanted to change the name of the song to not have the religious ties. can't think of the right word but you get the idea.

@harvey1954

Interesting story.

@matthewjones1959

@@MAB_Audio_Nut I wonder if the dates are right on this post then? It says 1985, but Judee died in 1979. Linda tells the story of working with Judee on this/ the drugs (Judee had been in several car accidents, had her spine fused twice, was in excruciating pain all the time) and shelving it, but the new Judee documentary (Lost Angel) places that in 1977 or 78.

@Chronicallycactus

@@matthewjones1959yeah- isn’t Judee on piano in this version? I believe there was more written about this one off session in Judee’s ‘Dreams Come True’ deluxe edition interview booklet. The date is 1978
