Cry Like a Rainstorm
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life isn't easy
Love never lasts
You just carry on
And keep moving fast

I pulled off the highway
And rolled into town
I'm just fancy free babe
And I travel 'round

Sometimes I'm up
Sometimes down
Where can I run to
How have I sinned
When you cry like a rainstorm
And you howl like the wind

And my thoughts are filled with memories
They won't let me be
But if all the stars are shining bright
Well they would not let me see

It's so cold and the rain keeps blowing
It's tearing through the town
But I'm still fancy free darling
And I travel 'round

Sometimes I'm up
Sometimes down
Oh where can I run to
How have I sinned
When you cry like a rainstorm
And you howl like the wind

Sometimes I'm up
Most times down
Oh where can I run to
Tell me how have I sinned
When you cry like a rainstorm
And you howl like the wind

Who can I turn to
Tell me where to begin
When you cry like a rainstorm
And you howl like the wind

When you cry like a rainstorm
And you howl like the wind

Overall Meaning

In Linda Ronstadt's song "Cry Like a Rainstorm," the lyrics speak to the challenges of life and love. Throughout the song, the singer explains that life is not easy, love never lasts, and they just have to keep moving forward. The song's introspective tone continues as the singer talks about wandering from town to town, seeking escape from the memories that won't leave them alone. However, no matter where they go, they can't escape the pain of life's storms - conveyed through the metaphor of a rainstorm and howling wind.

The singer's repeated question, "Where can I run to? How have I sinned?" shows how they feel lost and alone, unable to find a way out of the difficult situation they're in. The song ends on a somber note, with the repeated phrase "When you cry like a rainstorm and you howl like the wind," emphasizing the overwhelming emotional and physical storms that life can bring.

Overall, the song's lyrics provide a poignant commentary on the struggles of life and the inevitable difficulties that come along with it. Through the use of vivid metaphor and introspective questions, the lyrics convey a sense of helplessness in the face of life's storms, but also a resilient determination to keep moving forward.

My beloved wife, of blessed memory, was a member of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir who sang backup for Linda on this beautiful song. I played it over the loudspeakers as I motored out the Golden Gate and gave her ashes to the eternal ocean off Point Bonita. Thank you, Linda, for such a deeply moving song, and thank you, Kéllia, for giving my life such meaning in the few short years we were together. I miss you.

19yrs ago this album hit my soul. Now it just dawned on me again and I came searching. Linda your music is thought provoking and soulfood.

This song is so great because of Linda's emotional connection to it.  Kinda thought of her saying how tired she was of going from arena to arena before crowds she shied away from.  I hope , in the end, she found the inner peace to enjoy her life...she deserves it...and all the praise for her songs she gave us.
