GOOD MAN
Lou Doillon Lyrics

When absurdity grabs me by the hand
When my future's gone dim
When my thick's turned thin
Look away
And when my face turns spoilt
Just cause I won't do what I'm told
'Cause I won't get it all
Walk away
And please, don't tell me you understand
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
And please, don't tell me you understand
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
And when I say, I can't bear
Holding on to what will be taken away
When I'd rather let go
And pretend all is lost
Look away
And when my eyes sink deep
And I'd rather kill what I can't keep
When I beg for your pity
'Cause I want you as low as I
Look away
And please, don't tell me you understand
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
And please, don't tell me you understand
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
And please, don't tell me you understand
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
And please, don't tell me you understand
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
In Lou Doillon's song "Good Man," the lyrics speak to the internal struggles of a woman who is trying to reconcile herself with the overwhelming presence of a "good man" in her life. The song begins by describing the fear and absurdity that often grip the singer and the seeming loss of her future. In this moment, she implores the "good man" to "look away" from her and her struggles. The second verse speaks to the singer's stubbornness and unwillingness to comply with societal norms and expectations, leading to a "breakdown" where she is unable to cope with the weight of it all. Again, she requests that the "good man" walks away and does not try to claim he understands her pain because she knows he cannot truly understand her.
In the third verse, the singer describes her longing to let go of what will inevitably be taken from her and her wish to pretend that everything is already lost. This leads her to beg for pity and try to bring the "good man" down to her level. Ultimately, the singer seems to be asking for a release from her struggles that she does not know how to articulate, as she cannot seem to find a way to handle the "good man" in her life.

Oh when the fear settles in
When I am afraid and overwhelmed
When absurdity grabs me by the hand
When I am faced with things that make no sense
When my future's gone dim
When I can't see a way forward
When my thick's turned thin
When things have become difficult and tough
Look away
Please don't pay attention
And when my face turns spoilt
When I become angry and rebellious
Just 'cause I won't do what I'm told
Simply because I refuse to follow orders
When I break like a child
When I act immature and helpless
'Cause I won't get it all
Because I cannot have everything I want
Walk away
Just leave me alone
And please, don't tell me you understand
Please don't pretend to relate to my situation
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
Because I don't know how to handle someone who is kind and decent
And when I say, I can't bear
When I express that I am unable to handle something
Holding on to what will be taken away
Trying to keep something that is going to be lost anyway
When I'd rather let go
When I would rather give up and move on
And pretend all is lost
And act as if everything is hopeless
And when my eyes sink deep
When my eyes look sad and hopeless
And I'd rather kill what I can't keep
When I would rather destroy something than let it go
When I beg for your pity
When I ask for your sympathy
'Cause I want you as low as I
Because I want you to feel the same pain as me
And please, don't tell me you understand
Please don't pretend to relate to my situation
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
Because I don't know how to handle someone who is kind and decent
And please, don't tell me you understand
Please don't pretend to relate to my situation
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
Because I don't know how to handle someone who is kind and decent
'Cause what's a girl to do with such a good man
Because I don't know how to handle someone who is kind and decent
