ALL THESE NIGHTS
Lou Doillon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here by the ocean where the water meets the cause she awaits
Told that he′d be gone
And mention how long he'd have to stare back at the sun
And the years that keeps on spinning
A finger that keeps waving all the years spent alone

Here by the Great Wall for his men, for his pride he fights
Lost all he could claim
Nothing left now but his name against the winds he drifts away
And the years that keeps on spinning
His tears that keep on rolling all evenings far from home

Shall last in between her sorrow and his dreams seasides
He′s met with every stranger
Always seeking the same answers, something to hold, something to keep

For the years to keep on spinning
For an end to this longing, all this nights lost alone

Overall Meaning

"All These Nights" by Lou Doillon is a poignant song that encapsulates the pain of separation and longing for a loved one, as well as the futility of time that seems to keep spinning mercilessly. The lyrics describe two different scenarios, one by the ocean and the other by the Great Wall, where two people are struggling with similar emotions of missing and waiting.

In the first verse, the singer paints a picture of a woman waiting by the ocean for someone who has left and may not return. She thinks about how long it will be until he comes back, while time seems to endlessly spin away. She also mentions "the years spent alone," hinting that this separation has been going on for a while. In the chorus, she repeats the phrase "and the years that keep on spinning," emphasizing the idea of time passing by relentlessly.

In the second verse, the scene shifts to a man by the Great Wall, fighting for his pride and his name, but losing everything he had. He drifts away with the winds, leaving behind his tears and the years that keep rolling. The singer suggests that he too is lonely and far away from home. In the final lines, she expresses the hope that their longing will eventually come to an end, that they will find something to hold and keep.

Overall, "All These Nights" is a moving song that captures the emotional toll of separation, time, and longing. The singer's delicate vocals and the haunting melody add to the sense of melancholy and nostalgia.
