Their name is often said to derive from a Nordic word briefly translated as "of hidden worth", however the band have admitted during interview that it is just a word that Darren Ford made up
The band is comprised of vocalist Darren Ford, guitarist Dan Symons and bassist Miles Willey. Formed in 1998 in St. Albans, England, they signed with Nude Records, a financially-strapped recording company. They released the now highly revered Just Backward of Square in 2001 to mixed reactions from the British music press. After the collapse of Nude Records they resigned to Sanctuary Records releasing the critically acclaimed Welcome To Winners in October 2003. The band now run their own independent label Dedtedrecords which saw the release of a double CD Lowgold retrospective collection called Keep Music Miserable in October 2005.

Lowgold release new album 'Promise Lands' on 31st March 2008 and will briefly tour around its release.

I watch alot if explainer videos and voice is the second most important factor in one. The only thing more important is visuals. If either of these falls to a 6 or below I can not watch it. I can overlook visuals if they are unneeded, however. I just listen instead.

Shye has excellent visuals and scores a 9 out if 10 (See 3blue1brown or Mathologer for 10s.) I would only rank CtC as a 7 for visuals (No glaring issues and moderately interesting).

As to voice Shye's is only at good (7 out of 10). Simon for a 10. They(her? Not sure of pronoun) are substantially better then the vast majority of explainers who create a decidedly unpleasant experiance. Also, far better then me. I would also say this is thier weakest area.

Other factors I judge on are passion for a topic, script, clarity, novelety, and the topic itself. The last is only relevant in that it can not be an offensive topic. A passionate explainer with a good voice and interesting visuals can make anything interesting but I will not watch if you promote hate or are cruel. Tucker Carlson is a fantastic explainer but is not watched due to a monstrous viewpoint.

I would rate Shye as an 8 or better in passion, script, clarity, and novelty. Overall, I would absolutely subscribe and watch videos from Shye. They are already better then Simon Whistler and he is very successful.

Simons solve of Valrari was one of the most interesting and intriguing things I’ve ever seen. I admit I knew nothing about exocets before seeing it, but I was able to follow the logic as I watched his solve. Truly amazing. Thank you Shye for putting this video together. I saw a long list of things I’ve never heard of. I can already tell I’m gonna be obsessed with researching these for the next few days/weeks until I get some level of understanding of what they are.

While all of the setter videos have been truly excellent and insightful, I think this is the first one that I feel really showed me what a lot of setters mean when they say that they start from the ground and build the puzzle up from there rather than starting with a finished grid and working backwards. A wonderful and gently explained guide into the very deep rabbithole of setting! Thank you so much, Shye!

After hearing other setter videos recommending setting variants because classics are hard, I appreciate this. I like to set Anti Knights, and making a solve path felt pretty nebulous to me because there is so much permeation out of every step and every given. Hearing "one-stepper" used not only in a positive tone, but as a goal, is encouraging. Thank you for yet another perspective.

In case anyone doesn't already know this, Shye has been publishing classic sudoku on Logic Masters Germany. They're not easy but they aren't all as hard as Valtari, and well worth a look.

I would love to set a puzzle, and have been playing around with ideas, watching these videos, and stalking Discord.

But once I have set a few I know I would probably slip into some other challenge/interest. I rarely have the sticking power to stay with one challenge for long. So I feel bad asking people to test my puzzles. There are so many great puzzles kicking around by people who have a real passion for it. Seems unfair to pollute the waters with a dalliance. But the allure of trying is pretty powerful.

Setting puzzles is fun! If you're concerned about polluting the channel, you can just ask for testing if you're particularly proud of one, or if you're struggling to make something you have in mind and could use guidance. The testing channel is for a broad range of setter levels!

I was excited to learn your techniques and, hopefully, help me better understand how to solve sudoku. Unfortunately I couldn't understand what you were saying in the beginning of the video. Your words slurred together and you spoke so rapidly I couldn't understand what you were saying.

After reading the 44 comments posted I see that I am one of the very few dissenters of the vlog. I am happy that they were able to get value from your comments. Maybe in the future you could speak more clearly for those of us who are beyond millennial age and have a harder time hearing and comprehending rapid speech.

Why is a “one-stepper” a valuable goal? In other types of puzzles usually you need a few good breakthroughs to get through.

Y’all should experiment with other types of grid logic puzzles that aren’t sudokus :) lots of smaller, satisfying deductions, leading you to the total solution

If someone gets one step and doesn't get a digit out of it, it can be very discouraging. Especially if something is expected to be seen for the first time, having it be a one-stepper helps for solvers to internalize it. It becomes "that puzzle that required the exocet."

But it's true some puzzles can require several hard steps and still feel amazing. I got lucky in one puzzle I made, requiring a decently hard step that gave digits, that then required extending the trick, as if the solver unlocked the trick as an tool for continued use. It set up candidates in chains that finally toppled like dominos for a satisfying finish. Some solvers got a bit stuck after finding The Thing once, but others experienced in seeing it enjoyed getting to use it over and over.

The production and educational value of the video itself is exceptional, but your speaking voice is impossible to comprehend and follow without muting the volume and using closed captions, Shye. You slur your words with a high-pitch hissing 'sss'.

I'm pointing this out because you put so much effort into a video that could've been perfect; the standard by which all other 'How to Set' videos are judged if you wrote a script and had someone who took speaking classes and has a good microphone read that script for you.

While the S sounds were certainly more noticeable than in most speech it really did not bother me any. The part of the speech that stuck out to me was that I totally could not place the accent. It seemed mild but rather distinctive, yet left me with absolutely no clue of the origin.

So being distracted by the S sounds or having difficulty understanding is certainly not universal.
