Cuz you’ll never be my friend
You’re joking ‘bout the rest but at whose expense
You’ll never be my friend
She’ll never be my friend (She’ll never be my friend )
She’ll never be my friend (She’ll never be my friend )
She’ll never be my friend
Hey sexy plexi
With your frat-boy anorexi girl
You’ll never be my friend
You walk too tall
And you think too small
So you’ll never be my friend
He’ll never be my friend (he’ll never be my friend)
He’ll never be my friend (he’ll never be my friend)
He’s never gonna solve all my problems, be my Tony Robbins
Never be me friend
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey there lady better hit the road baby
Cuz you’ll never be my friend
You’ll never be my friend (you’ll never be my friend )
You’ll never be my friend (you’ll never be my friend )
You’ll never be my wise man guru not my Desmond Tutu
Never be my friend
He’ll never be my friend (He’ll never be my friend)
She’ll never be my friend (She’ll never be my friend )
You’ll never be the one that I call when it all goes wrong
You’ll never be my friend. End.
The lyrics to Lucy Schwartz's song My Friend are a direct address to someone who is trying to befriend the singer but is failing to do so. The song starts with the singer telling the person in question to leave because they will never be her friend. The reason behind this statement becomes clear as the song progresses, as the singer highlights the person's negative traits such as joking at other people's expense and walking too tall while thinking too small. The singer goes on to emphatically state that the person will never be the one she calls when things go wrong, and they will never be her wise man guru or a problem solver like Tony Robbins.
The lyrics are an exploration of the theme of trust and the inability to establish it with certain people. The song is a confrontation of sorts where the singer has reached a point in her relationship with the person in question where she needs to be direct and make it clear that they will never be her friend. It is also interesting to note that the song employs repetition in a unique way, with the same lines being repeated not just throughout the song but also between the two verses. This gives the song a singsong quality that is somewhat unusual for a song that deals with such heavy themes.
