nite swim
Luna Shadows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love, meet me in the garden or the backseat of your car
Oh, the nosy neighbors aren't wrong, star-crossed love, we are
I'm not fit to be a mother, oh, but baby, when you smile
I can see us for forever with one beautiful but suicidal child

Literary legends, skip the poison, straight to heaven
Oh, it's hell when you leave (hell when you leave)
I wanna go for a nite swim
Somewhere in the hills with a big backyard
Go for a nite swim
Be the Romeo and the Juliet of our generation
Except without the dying and the devastation
Infatuation, oh, without the miscommunication

Our poor friends were too wasted to pace themselves
Too much, too fast, too soon
Oh, baby, take a bullet then I'll take you to my room (room)

Literary legends, skip the poison, straight to heaven
Oh, it's hell when you leave (when you leave)

I wanna go for a nite swim
Somewhere in the hills with a big backyard
Go for a nite swim
Be the Romeo and the Juliet of our generation
Except without the dying and the devastation
Infatuation, oh, without the miscommunication

We can do better than all of the stories
Of lovers before me and you (you, you)
Oh, read every letter, and rip up their pages
'Cause nothing is sacred but you
And you're not holy
Unless you hold me

And take it home for a nite swim
Somewhere in the hills with a big backyard
Go for a nite swim
Be the Romeo and the Juliet of our generation

Except without the dying and the devastation
Infatuation, oh, without the miscommunication

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "nite swim" by Luna Shadows describe a passionate and tumultuous love story. The singer yearns for a romantic night swim with her lover in a large backyard in the hills. She compares their love to that of Romeo and Juliet, but without the tragic ending. The singer acknowledges that their love is all-consuming and perhaps dangerous, as she mentions a "suicidal child" and the idea of skipping the poison and going straight to heaven. She also recognizes her own flaws, noting that she is not fit to be a mother, but finds solace in her partner's smile, which allows her to imagine a future together.

The lyrics also touch on the theme of breaking away from past relationships and forging a new path with this new love. The singer urges her partner to take a leap of faith, saying that they can do better than the lovers that came before them. She encourages them to forget everything that came before and focus solely on each other. The romantic imagery of a moonlit swim and the reference to literary legends help to create a sense of timelessness and passion.

"Digital Pacific" explores the impact of technology on relationships, and "nite swim" is no exception. Semi-narrated from the perspective of millennial Juliet, this song pokes fun at this most famous love story as it questions whether or not problems would've been improved or exacerbated by digital communication. When I think of the extremely problematic R+J, a lot of their tragedy is based on farcical miscommunication that could've been so easily avoided in 2021. Yet in an age of instant & excessive communication, there has been a sharp rise in youth depression, suicide, and overall unhappiness. This song masquerades as euphoric but underneath raises some fairly dark questions re: technology and our mental health.

@LunaShadows

also: "nite swim" was one of the first songs written for this LP back in 2015. I have changed a lot as a person, songwriter, and a producer since then, and so for me, hearing this song is a little bit like looking through a time capsule. When I hear this song, I hear the building block from which everything else on "Digital Pacific" was built. Majority of my music is autobiographical, and this song is a bit of an exception, as the narrator is actually a satirical, digital native Juliet. I think a lot about how communication both binds us and breaks us, and how dramatically even just 10 year gaps in technological developments can shape relationships.

"Yet in an age of instant & excessive communication" id agree its instant ;) i count myself as lucky to be one of the last people to go through teens without a mass media, i wrote letters to my friends During Uni... actual snail mail.
Social media just isnt a substitute for actual interaction, unfortunate then that it seems to have so largely replaced it.
