Even the brightest, most upbeat Luna Shadows song carries a hint of romantic melancholy. She describes her artistic ambitions as a lifelong dare that, “sounded pretty fun” and brought order to the emotional chaos of everyday life. The end product, made in garages and bedrooms under the palm trees of Echo Park, sounds a bit like Ellie Goulding took Lana del Rey to the beach.

Welcome to gentrification
Someone else's suffering
Is somebody's vacation
Everyone in LA
They blame the constellations
I got everything that I need
So why am I complaining?
Sidewalks here have lived a life
Before I even made it
Been here for a minute
And I still feel like I'm faking
And I cried in the parking lot of vons
Drove home jaded
New wave, new neighborhood
A brand new generation
All I wanna do
All I wanna see
Is someone worse than me?
All day long
On trash TV
Take my third depression nap
I'll get up when I'm less blue
Silent kill, infinite scroll
That's the way they get you
Sit in bed, refresh, we're fresh
We're all just what we're used to
Got ten perfect fingers
But we only ever use two
All I wanna do
All I wanna see
Is someone worse than me?
All day long
On trash TV
No nothing scares me anymore
Anything that can is going wrong
Oh, nothing scares me anymore
Got a Sunday feeling now
I think it's time I give in
All I wanna do
All I wanna see
Is someone worse than me?
All day long
On trash TV
All day long on trash TV (all I wanna do)
All day long on trash TV (all I wanna see)
All day long on trash TV (is someone worse than me)
All day long on trash TV
All day long on trash TV
"Trash TV" by Luna Shadows is a poignant depiction of the struggles and contradictions of living in Los Angeles during a time of gentrification and societal disconnect.
The opening lines, "Mattress left on sunset, Welcome to gentrification, Someone else's suffering, Is somebody's vacation," set the tone for the song. It speaks to the displacement and inequality that comes with gentrification, where the struggles and hardships of one person become entertainment or a backdrop for others. The line highlights the callousness of society, where the rich and privileged can often overlook or exploit the suffering of others for personal gain or enjoyment.
The next verse delves into the personal feelings of the singer, who despite having everything they need, still finds themselves discontented. The line "Sidewalks here have lived a life, Before I even made it" symbolizes the weight of history and the feeling of inadequacy that can arise when living in a city with such a rich and storied past. The singer feels like an imposter, as if they are merely pretending to belong in this new wave of gentrification and a new generation.
The chorus expresses the desire to find solace in witnessing the struggles of others, specifically through trash TV. The line "All I wanna do, All I wanna see, Is someone worse than me?" conveys a sense of longing to feel better about oneself by comparing their own problems to those of others. It speaks to the voyeuristic nature of society and how people often find comfort or temporary relief in seeing the misfortunes of others.
In the bridge, the lyrics convey a sense of apathy and desensitization. The line "No, nothing scares me anymore, Anything that can is going wrong" reflects a feeling of numbness and resignation, where the singer has become immune to the fears and anxieties of life. The final lines, "Got a Sunday feeling now, I think it's time I give in," suggest a feeling of surrender, as if the singer is ready to succumb to the complacency and disillusionment that comes from being constantly bombarded with a world of trash TV.
Overall, "Trash TV" explores themes of social inequality, personal discontent, and the allure of escapism. It critiques society's tendency to exploit the suffering of others for entertainment and highlights the internal struggle of feeling disconnected and dissatisfied in an era of gentrification.

Incorporating both "Digital" and "Pacific" themes, the "trash tv" video combines glimpses at life on the east side of LA with dark technological undertones. There are a few ways to view this video, but my personal interpretation is one that reflects on cycles of depression. The television has a few meanings -- literal tv (confession - I watch a lot of trash television at low points) or something more metaphorical (representing any modern technology, or any unhealthy relationship with social media). In a culture where we stare, compare, obsess, and refresh, I often wonder if all this screen time brings out the best or worst in me.
