Mantovani was born in Venice, Italy and his father was the concertmaster of La Scala orchestra under Arturo Toscanini. His family moved to England in 1912, where he studied at Trinity College of Music in London. After graduation, he formed his own orchestra, which played in and around Birmingham. By the time World War II broke out, his orchestra was one of the most popular in England, both on the BBC and in live performances.
It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
Mantovani & His Orchestra Lyrics

That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold
"Peace on the earth, good will to men
From heaven's all gracious king"
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing
Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing
And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing
For lo, the days are hastening on
By prophet bards foretold
When with the ever-circling years
Comes 'round the age of gold
When peace shall over all the earth
It's ancient splendors fling
And our whole world give back the song
Which now the angels sing
The first stanza of Mantovani & His Orchestra's song "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear" paints a beautiful picture of a peaceful night that is suddenly interrupted by the glorious song of Angels. The imagery of these celestial beings, bending near the earth and touching their harps of gold is evocative of their magical and otherworldly nature. The Angels' message of goodwill and peace on earth is particularly poignant during the holiday season, as we are reminded of the importance of compassion and understanding towards all. The stillness of the world is a representation of the awe-inspiring experience of hearing the Angels' song, and the power of their message to inspire a reverence and appreciation for the world around us.
The second stanza continues the theme of the first, depicting the Angels' continued presence in the world, their wings unfurled as they impart their heavenly music. The description of the Angels hovering over the world, giving their song to all who will listen, and even hovering above Babel sounds, emphasizes the power and universality of their message. The final stanza speaks of the prophecy of the arrival of a new era of peace on earth, where the whole world will "give back the song which now the angels sing." This foretold time is referred to as the age of gold, where the splendors of an ancient time will be rediscovered and the blessings of peace and goodwill will usher in a new era of hope.
Overall, the lyrics of "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear" underscore the power of music to inspire and uplift, particularly during times of darkness and uncertainty. The message of peace on earth and goodwill to all is a universal one that transcends religious boundaries and speaks to the importance of understanding and unity.
