She was born July 17, 1959 in Bayshore, New York and worked as a music teacher prior to moving to Nashville in 1985 to take a songwriter job with Sparrow Records. By 1986, the label signed her as a performer and she scored her first CCM chart hit "Fight for God" from debut album NEVER FOR NOTHING.
Her sound for the most part is pop but at times has shown influences from Motown (as on SIMPLE HOUSE's "Talk About Love") and Celtic music (via the NEW IRISH HYMNS series beginning with a 2001 collaboration with Máire Brennan and Joanne Hogg).
Outside her own singing, she formed a publishing company (Modernm) and has produced for other artists. She has also authored several books and involved herself with charitable organizations battling AIDS and poverty.
Horses

Coming for my soul
Taking me to places
I wasn't ready yet to go, no no
Last night, I dreamed of silence
The silence that I keep
All the things, I could've said
I need to remember
The horses will come
(I need to remember)
I need to remember
How quickly they run
(I need to remember)
I want no regrets
When the horses come for me
I cannot forget
That the horses come for me
Last night I dreamed You with me
You put Your finger to my lips
And You told me to be brave now
And I felt like I'd been kissed
I need to remember
You're always with me
(I need to remember)
And I need to remember
You're the reason I breathe
(I need to remember)
I want no regrets
When the horses come for me
I cannot forget
That the horses come for me
Last night, I woke up crying
But I knew I'd be alright
I want no regrets
When the horses come for me
Oh, I cannot forget
That the horses come for me
No regrets
I cannot forget
Last night, I dreamed of horses
Margaret Becker's song "Horses" is about a dream that she had where she was being taken to places that she wasn't ready yet to go. She dreams about silence that she keeps, and all the things she could have said that kept her up at night. She needs to remember that the horses will come for her and how quickly they run. She wants no regrets when the horses come for her, and she cannot forget that the horses come for her.
The horses represent death, and Becker is saying that she wants to be ready when it comes for her. She wants to live her life fully and without regret so that when death comes for her, she will have nothing to fear. The dream of horses is a reminder of her own mortality and that she should not take her life for granted. The presence of God in her dream represents hope, comfort, and guidance in the face of the unknown.
