Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

Seus olhos pousaram nos meus
Num arrepio sutil
Eu vi... pois é, eu reparei
Você me tirou pra dançar
Sem nunca sair do lugar
Sem botar os pés no chão
Sem música pra acompanhar
Foi só por um segundo
Todo o tempo do mundo
E o mundo todo se perdeu
Eu vi quando você me viu
Seus olhos buscaram nos meus
O mesmo pecado febril
Eu vi... pois é, eu reparei
Você me tirou todo o ar
Pra que eu pudesse respirar
Eu sei que ninguém percebeu
Foi só você e eu
Foi só por um segundo
Todo o tempo do mundo
E o mundo todo se perdeu (2x)
Ficou só você eu eu
Quando você me viu...
In Maria Rita's song "Cupido," the singer describes a moment of mutual attraction and intense chemistry between two individuals. In the opening lines, she sings about how she noticed the other person's gaze locking onto hers and how she felt a subtle shiver run down her spine. She continues to describe how the two of them danced without ever moving a step and without any music to accompany them. Despite the lack of traditional surroundings for romance to flourish, the singer notices how the other person took her breath away and allowed her to breathe at the same time.
The chorus becomes a refrain as the singer repeats how the world itself seemed to disappear when the two of them locked eyes. She describes how the other person's sinfully passionate gaze took her breath away, and no one else in the room seemed to notice the incredible connection between them. The final lines repeat the chorus, emphasizing the overwhelming power of love felt by these two individuals in a single moment.
This song's lyrics capture the beauty of unexpected chemistry and the intensity of attraction that can hit us when we least expect it. While the singer doesn't go into detail about what happens next or whether this moment of connection leads to something more, the raw passion and attraction between two individuals in "Cupido" creates a sense of longing and desire that's relatable to anyone who's ever experienced those feelings.
