Starstrukk
Marina & the Diamonds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nice legs, Daisy dukes,
Makes a man go woo-woo
That's the way they all come through
Like woo-woo woo-woo
Low-cut, see-through shirts that make you woo-woo
That's the way she come through
Like woo-woo woo-woo
('Cause I) Just set them up, just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down
('Cause I) Just set them up, just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down

I think I should know how
To make love to something innocent
Without leaving my fingerprints out, now
L-O-V-E's just another word
I'll never learn to pronounce
How do I say I'm sorry
'Cause the word is
Never gonna come out no
L-O-V-E's just another word
I'll never learn to pronounce

Tight jeans, double D's makin' me go woo-woo
All the people on the street know (woo-woo-woo-woo)
Iced-out, lit-up
Make the kids go woo-woo
All the people on the street know woo-woo woo-woo

('Cause I) Just set them up, just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down
('Cause I) Just set them up, just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down

I think I should know how
To make love to something innocent
Without leaving my fingerprints out now
L-O-V-E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce
How do I say I'm sorry
'Cause the word is
Never gonna come out no
L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce
Push it baby
Push it baby out of control
I got my gun cocked tight and I'm ready to blow
Push it baby
Push it baby out of control, this is the same old dance that you already know
Push it baby out of control, this is the same old dance that you already know

I think I should know how
To make love to something innocent
Without leaving my fingerprints out no

L-O-V-E's just another word
I'll never learn to pronounce

Overall Meaning

In "Starstrukk," Marina & the Diamonds sings about the attraction of physical appearances and the use of manipulation in relationships. The first verse describes the way women dress to impress men and how they can easily manipulate them with their looks. The chorus talks about setting people up to knock them down, meaning that the singer enjoys manipulating people for her own pleasure. The second verse goes deeper into her personal struggle of being unable to have meaningful relationships without causing harm. She finds herself unable to pronounce the word "love," suggesting that she may have been hurt in the past.

The repetition of "woo-woo" in the chorus implies a sense of superficiality and lack of substance in the relationships the singer describes. The use of language such as "push it baby out of control" and "got my gun cocked tight and I'm ready to blow" further emphasizes the theme of manipulation and dominance.

Despite the song's catchy beat and playful tone, it looks at the darker side of relationships and the struggle of finding genuine intimacy.

How, do I say I'm sorry when the words will never come out?

You know that type of thing just don't work on me
Whistling and trying to flirt with me
Don't take this personally
'Cause we were never in love
It doesn't really matter who you say you are
Singing out the window of your car
Go find another girl across the bar
'Cause L-O-V-E's not what this was

I think I should know
How, to make love to something innocent
Without leaving my fingerprints out
Oh, now L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce
Oh, how do I say I'm sorry when the word will never come out?

Crazy how the male version sounds like a brag and the female version sounds like a confession

@nietzschesfavouritesock

I think you should see the versions as Marinas and not the "female´s" version and the same with these guys..

@FreeandWiild259

Ca lypso lol alright

@karbunkul211

There's no male version. There's an original and Marina's version.

@FreeandWiild259

@@karbunkul211 you sound pretentious but whatever, excuse me

@mic4902

@@FreeandWiild259 Quite the stretch there, since it doesn't line up with the lyrics to be any kind of a "brag" at all. Take your gender battle back to the school yard, there's a woman singing this song.

@sprogg2001

2023 here! One of the few covers out there that blows the original out of the water! Marina and the diamonds you didn't nail it, you changed it, from a sleazy brag to a heartfelt confession, the throaty vocals and instrumentals packs so much punch. Please can we have the original recording.

@edslater6380

One of the best covers ever. Anyone listening in 2022?

@nikolayzolotaryov9964
