Psalm 139
MercyMe Lyrics

You're familiar with all my ways
You have placed your hand upon me
With such a knowledge I can't attain
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I make my bed in the depths
If I go up to the heavens
You are there
If I rise on the wings of the dawn
If I settle on the far side of the sea
Even there your hand will hold me fast
Even there your hand will guide me
You are there
You are there
You have searched me and you know me
You're familiar with all my ways
You have placed your hand upon me
With such a knowledge I can't attain
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I make my bed in the depths
If I go up to the heavens
You are there
If I rise on the wings of the dawn
If I settle on the far side of the sea
Even there your hand will hold me fast
Even there your hand will guide me
You are there
I will sing
Sing a new song
Because you love me
I will sing
Sing a new song
Because you care
I will sing
Sing a new song
Because you're there
I will sing
Sing a new song
Because you love me
I will sing
Sing a new song
Because you care
I will sing
Sing a new song
Because you're there
The lyrics to "Psalm 139" by MercyMe are based on the Biblical psalm of the same name. The psalm celebrates God's omniscience and omnipresence, and the lyrics of the song reflect this praise. The song starts by acknowledging that God has searched and knows the singer completely, even to the point where God's knowledge is beyond the singer's own comprehension. This idea is reinforced in the later lyrics, which state that God is present everywhere, even if the singer were to try to escape from God's presence. The chorus of the song meditates on the singer's response to this knowledge of God, choosing to sing a new song because of God's love and care.
The lyrics to "Psalm 139" capture the sense of awe and reverence that the psalmists felt when contemplating the vastness of God's knowledge and presence. The song encourages listeners to reflect on their own relationship with God and to recognize the depth of God's love and care for them. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the singer's response of gratitude and worship, echoing the psalmist's call to "bless the Lord" and "praise his holy name."

Thirteen years ago tomorrow, April 7, I was born again. This was the very first Scripture that God revealed to me. I knew I was seeing it for a reason and I felt his love for me in this beautiful Psalm which has become my favorite. Yes, I was fearfully and wonderfully made! We all were who choose to give over their lives to Christ. I love knowing that I am a one of kind masterpiece in God's eyes. It no longer matters what others think of me. What matters is what God thinks of me. He says, I am his and he calls me by name. Thank you, Father for granting mercy upon me and giving me grace. I am free indeed and I love you, Jesus! <3

This is amazing! I actually read Psalm 139 last night before I went to sleep. Then I get on Youtube today, and it's one of the first videos that pops up on my recommended list. I didn't even know MercyMe had set this psalm to music! No coincidences--only God, who is obviously telling me to focus on this scripture! Praise the Holy Spirit!

“O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I get up; You understand my thought from far off. You search my path and my lying down and are aware of all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it fully. You put Yourself behind and before me, and keep Your hand on me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is lofty, and I cannot fathom it. Where shall I go from Your spirit, or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell at the end of the sea, even there Your hand shall guide me, and Your right hand shall take hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall coverme, and the light shall be as night aboutme,” even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines as the day, for the darkness is like light to You. You brought my inner parts into being; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, for You made me with fear and wonder; marvelous are Your works, and You know me completely. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and intricately put together in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw me unformed, yet in Your book all my days were written, before any of them came into being. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with You. If only You would slay the wicked, OGod! O violent men, depart from me. For they speak against You with malice, and Your enemies take your name in vain. Do I not hate those, O Lord, who hate You? And do I not abhor those who rise up against You? I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my concerns, and see if there is any rebellious way inme, and lead me in the ancient way.”

I don't remember this song, but was searching for the Psalm. Beautiful. I pray that more musicians would look to God's word in it's fullness for their lyrics (the more, the better). It never returns empty. True anointing comes from Truth Himself. <3

Over 20 years ago I was privileged to be in Charlotte, NC as a college and career student at a summer camp the guys played at before they took off. This song, along with the music from the first "Traces of Rain" album was quintessential to inspiring my love for God and worship. These songs continue to take me deeper and inspire my love for God as they remind me of the amazing presence of God that rested on us during that time of worship.
