Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Come Artisti
Mia Martini Lyrics

scatola coi dischi dentro
masticando inglese dietro ai solchi
correvamo noi stare là nei
pomeriggi freddi ma l'atmosfera
piano si scaldava mentre il cielo
fuori un po' imbruniva come rabbia
dentro ci esplodeva la nostra bella
le onde azzurre sopra noi fuoco
noi, d'amore accesi un bacio in
fretta e tu bastavi.
anni quanta polvere negli occhi
quanti fuochi accesi e spenti
allora il cielo all'imbrunire ma
esplosioni non si fan sentire eppure
siamo stati noi ribelli come voi che
ridendo ci passate accanto e poi
stati voi come noi.
The song "Come Artisti" by Mia Martini describes a moment in time when the singer and her friends used to hang out together around a jukebox, listening to music and dancing. They would try to understand the English lyrics of the songs and enjoy the atmosphere, especially during cold afternoons. Despite the sky getting darker outside, their rebellious spirit kept growing, and they were consumed by their youthful energy and love for each other.
As time passed, they became more mature and distant, with their fantasies fading away. Although they still visit the same place, it's not the same as before. However, they remain loyal to the memories they shared, and the singer hopes that they will reunite someday. The lyrics are powerful, nostalgic, and emotional, representing the universal theme of youth, memories, and the passing of time.
Overall, "Come Artisti" is not just a song about teenage memories but is talking about the timeless feeling of nostalgia that everyone can relate to, regardless of age. The song's sentimental value is what makes it so significant among the Italian audience.

We were all gathered around a jukebox, that box with records playing, chewing English behind the grooves
We were running to be there in the cold afternoons, but the atmosphere was gradually warming up
Mentre il cielo fuori un po' imbruniva come rabbia
While the sky outside was darkening a bit, filled with anger
Inside of us, our beautiful age was exploding, we were rebellious like the sea, and the wind
The azure waves above us were like fire, and we were lit up with love. We shared a kiss in a hurry, and you were enough
With our eyes gazing at a thousand stars, we consumed months and years
Quanta polvere negli occhi quanti fuochi accesi e spenti quanti tentativi amore, per ritornare là
So much dust in our eyes, so many fires lit and extinguished, so many attempts at love, just to go back there
Here, the moon is still chasing the sun, but our fantasies are now thin
And now, there's no one left to conquer my smile like two siblings
At the calm sea, with the wind blowing, the waves making a sound, it's like we are artists, waiting to perform well
And even the lights go out on the stage, we return alone, like we did then, as the sky turns dark
But there are no explosions to be heard, yet we were rebellious like you
You pass us by, laughing, as we touch the wind above the waves, flying with our beautiful age, but suddenly we're gone
Night falls, and you too will have been like us
