Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

La mia razza
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ha stracci colorati
Legati sulle spalle
Puntati sulla testa
Stracci per il lutto
E stracci, stracci per la festa
Si sposa dappertutto
E sposi non ne ha
Senza saggezza
Che vive e muore di curiosità
È la mia razza
Come una carezza
Una carezza sulla tristezza
Difficile e imperfetta
These lyrics are from the song "La mia razza" by Mia Martini. The title translates to "My race" in English. Mia Martini, whose real name was Domenica Bertè, was an Italian singer and songwriter known for her emotional and powerful performances. In this song, she talks about her own people, her race. She sees them on the streets, in their colourful rags tied on their shoulders and heads. They wear different kinds of rags, some for mourning and some for celebration. Her people get married everywhere, but they have no spouses. They are her race, without any wisdom, who live and die of curiosity. They are like a caress on sadness, difficult, imperfect, and she sees herself as being more imperfect than them. Her race does not change, and she would not change them.
The lyrics suggest that Mia Martini has deep love and empathy for her people, despite their misunderstood nature. She believes that they are unique and special in their own way, with their distinctive ragged appearance, colorful dress code and characteristic behaviors. Her race is the source of her inspiration and the reason for her artistry. They fill her soul with their struggles, their energy, and their uninhibited way of living their lives. However, she also acknowledges that her race can be fragile and unpredictable, as they lose their breath and direction in life, both on the main roads and on the way to their homes. They seem to have difficulty grasping reality and fall short in their imaginations. Yet, Mia Martini accepts them for who they are, and believes that they are worth celebrating.
