Since You Stayed Here
Michael Crawford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You'd never recognize the room.
The pictures all have different frames now.
And all the chairs are rearranged now.
Somehow, I've thrown out every souvenir.
Yes, there've been changes made
since you stayed here.

You'd never recognize the street.
The neighbor's kids play different games now.
The colors in the trees have changed now.
Strange how I've hardly thought of you this year.
Yes, there've been changes made since you stayed here.

The same address, the more or less.
More happens, less matters, I guess.

You'd never recognize my life.
The party-givers know my name now.
And when I cry it's not the same now.
Somehow, I never waste a single tear.
Yes, there've been changes made
since you stayed here.

You'd never recognize the room.
You'd never recognize . . .

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Michael Crawford's song Since You Stayed Here are reflective of the changes that have taken place in the singer's life since the departure of a significant other. The opening stanza indicates that the singer has moved on and is exhibiting signs of newfound independence, as evidenced by the rearrangement of the furniture in the room. The use of different picture frames, which suggests the presence of new memories, further highlights the singer's desire to create a new life that is separate from his past.

The second verse is a continuation of the first, as the singer highlights the changes that have occurred in the street, including the shifting colors of the trees and the changing games that the neighbors' kids play. These changes reflect the singer's changing perspective on life and his ability to appreciate the beauty of his surroundings, despite the absence of his former partner.

The final stanza reflects the lessons that the singer has learned since parting ways with his ex, including the realization that his life has taken on a new form, with new people and experiences that he is grateful for. The use of the phrase "more happens, less matters" suggests that the singer has gained perspective and is now focused on living life to the fullest, rather than dwelling on the past.

Overall, the lyrics to Since You Stayed Here are a powerful testament to the transformative power of change, and the ability of individuals to grow and evolve in the face of adversity.

I first saw him perform this song on the Regis Philbin show. He sang beautifully and emotionally, and teared up at the end. I remember Regis said " Wow, here he is, The Phantom, crying, he really gets into his songs!" I thought that Regis was just being Regis, but have become a Michael fan ever since. This is my favorite of all his songs.
