Heaven
Mike Oldfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is that morning,
It's waiting for you.
The face of destiny
Standing before you.
This is zero hour, now is for you.
Can you feel that power inside of you?
This priceless moment
In your possession.
Answers to mysteries
Stand in succession.
This is zero hour and there's no way back.
Can you feel that power? In its arms you're wrapped
All through the night-time
'Til the sun comes in.
Now Heaven's open.
Just fly right in.
Now you stand in that garden,
This is that vision.
Out on the world's edge,
It's your baptism.
This is zero hour and your hands are free.
Can you feel that power? It's ecstasy!
All through the night-time,
'Til the sun comes in.
Now Heaven's open.
Fly right in.
Waiting for night-time
'Til the sun comes in.
All through the night-time,
Let the blue sky in.
Heaven's open,
The sun comes in.
Heaven's open.
Let that blue sky in!
You know, sun comes in.

Now, heaven's open.
Fly right in.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mike Oldfield's song "Heaven" describe a moment of great potential and opportunity that is open to the listener. The words express a sense of excitement, anticipation, and empowerment that comes with standing on the threshold of a new experience. The first verse establishes that the morning has arrived and that something significant is about to happen. Destiny is personified as a face that is "standing before you," giving the sense that the listener has a date with fate.

The chorus reframes the moment as "zero hour," an idea that is repeated throughout the song. This is a decisive point where the listener must choose to act or risk missing out. The lyrics use the metaphor of power to describe the feeling of potential that comes with this moment. It's something that the listener can feel inside, a sense of strength and capability that is waiting to be unleashed.

The final verse uses religious imagery to describe the potential of the moment. Standing in a garden at the edge of the world represents a kind of liminal space where anything is possible. The listener's hands are free, suggesting that they have the power to shape their own destiny if they choose to take it. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, urging the listener to seize the moment and "fly right in" to heaven.

I have always appreciated the irony in the fact that, after all the great singers who have appeared on his records, my favorite Mike Oldfield pop vocal track is one he sung himself.

Same here.

I can't believe Mike sang this. In his autobiography he was talking about the recording of this and how he felt he was just not a good singer. He is fab!!!

My favourite Olfield´s song. Electric, strong, magnetic... Thank you.
