Naif
Mikel Erentxun Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dormidos en el desván,
El día que terminó
El año del cerdo.

Roca, sedal, bambú,
Aroma de juventud,
Cuadriculando el mar.
Llueve y no es abril
Y yo sigo aquí.

La sombra de una canción,
La marca de un antifaz,
El ojo del huracán.

Piezas de dominó,
Juegos de construcción,
En cajas de cartón.

Llueve y no es abril
Y yo sigo aquí

Llueve y no es abril
Es mejor así.

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Mikel Erentxun's song Naif paints a picture of a forgotten attic, with its residents asleep and apparently unaware that the year of the pig has ended. The use of the word "dormidos" (asleep) creates a sense of abandonment or neglect, and the fact that it's the end of a year, which is usually a time for reflection and celebration, adds to the feeling of isolation. The second verse serves as a contrast to this scene by describing "roca, sedal, bambú" (rock, fishing line, and bamboo) which are symbols of youth and adventure. These memories are juxtaposed with a scene of "cuadriculando el mar" (griding the sea) which evokes a sense of confinement and limitation on that freedom.

The chorus "Llueve y no es abril / Y yo sigo aquí" (It's raining and it's not April / And I'm still here) ties the two verses together thematically as it signifies a sense of melancholy and resignation to a current situation, in this case, the singer is physically present but emotionally detached. The last line of the chorus "Es mejor así" (It's better this way) could be interpreted as an acceptance of this reality, however, it could also be seen as a desire for things to stay as they are.
