So Near So Far
Miles Davis Lyrics

You don't know this boogie is for real

I used to put my faith in worship
But then my chance to get to Heaven slipped
Oh, I used to worry about the future
But then I throw my caution to the wind
I have no reason to be care free (no, no, no)
Until I took a trip to the other side of town (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know I heard that boogie rhythm, hey
I had no choice but to get down, down, down, down

Dance, woo, nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance
Got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby, woo-oh

I feel the thunder see the lightning
I know this anger's heaven sent
So I've got to hang out all my hang-ups
'Cause of the boogie I feel so hell bent, hey, hey
It's just an instant gut reaction, that I got
I know I've never ever felt like this before
I don't know what to do
But then that's nothing new
Stuck between hell and high water
I need a cure to make it through, hey

Dance, yeah, nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance, hey
Got canned heat in my heals tonight, baby
You know, know, know I'm gonna dance, yeah
All the nasty things that people say, dance, yeah
But I'm gonna make it anyway, dance, yeah
Got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby
You know I got canned heat in my heels

You know this boogie is for real

Only the wind can know the answer
And she cries to me when I'm asleep
She says you know that you can go much faster
I know that people's talk can be so cheap, hey, hey
I've got this voodoo child in-veined on me
I'm gonna use this power to ascend
You know I've got these running heels to use
Sometimes there's no way I lose
I was born to run and built to last
You'll never see my feet 'cause they move so fast

Dance, yeah, hey, nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through, just dance, hey
Got canned heat in my heels, tonight, baby
Hey, I've got to dance, yeah
All the nasty things that people say, dance, yeah
But I'm gonna make it anyway
Dance, yeah, got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby

You know this boogie is for real
Got so much canned heat in my heels, yeah
Gon' dance, gon' dance my blues away tonight
You know I'm gonna dance my blues away
You know this boogie is for real
Got so much canned heat in my heels, yeah
Gon' dance, gon' dance my blues away tonight

Dance, come on
Got canned heat in my heels tonight
Dance, uh-huh, oh yeah
Canned heat in my heels tonight
Dance, uh-huh, alright
Canned heat in my heels tonight, baby
Uh-huh, oh yeah
Hey, got so much

Dance
Hey, DJ, let the music play (let the music play, yeah)
I'm gonna live this party life (I wanna live this party life)
Hey, DJ, throw my cares away (let the music play, yeah)
I'm gonna live this party life (I wanna live this party life)
Hey, DJ, let the music play (I wanna live this party life)
I'm gonna live this party life (I wanna live this party life)
Hey, DJ, throw my cares away (party life, party life)
I'm gonna live this party life (I wanted, I wanted to go home)
Canned heat in my heels tonight

(Dance)
You know that this boogie is for real (dance)
Got so much canned heat in my heels (dance)
Gon' dance, gonna dance my blues away tonight (dance)
You know, you know this boogie, this boogie is for real (dance)

Got so much canned heat, canned heat in my heels (dance)
You know, I'm gonna dance my blues away tonight (dance)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Miles Davis's song "So Near So Far" suggest a sense of liberation. The first verse suggests the singer was caught in religious beliefs. They "used to put faith in worship" but later realized they have nothing to lose, so they throw "caution to the wind." The second verse is an extended metaphor of dancing as a way to cope with reality's challenges. The bad times the singer is experiencing are likened to thunder and lightning, and the boogie became the cure for their struggles. The lyric "got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby" suggests an excitement and eagerness to dance away the blues. In the third verse, the singer receives advice from the wind that they can move much faster. The reference to "voodoo child" suggests a spiritual component, but this time it is different from the religious one in the first verse, and instead, it refers to another way of seeing how the singer can approach life. The song ends with a strong declaration of nothing else to do but dance through life and canned heat in their heels.

One fascinating fact about the song is that it was written by Tony Crombie, who was a British jazz drummer and composer. Crombie wrote the music for this song specifically for Miles Davis, who later added his lyrics to it. Another interesting fact about the track is that it is from one of the most controversial periods of Miles Davis's career known as his electric period. During this period, Davis began incorporating electric instruments such as synthesizers into his compositions, moving towards fusion jazz. The song features a bass guitar, trumpet, saxophone, electric piano, drums, and percussion. Additionally, the song's producer, Teo Macero, altered the recordings significantly, slicing and splicing the tapes to rearrange the individual performances to create a cohesive piece of music.

George Coleman tenor sax solo starts - 3:10

This track comes from one of Miles' most underrated albums. Coleman isn't exactly thrilling, but Miles is close to his very best, both pianists play wonderfully, Tony Williams is amazing as usual, and the selection of tunes excellent and varied.

George Coleman was a beautiful player. Great tone and could play any tune at any tempo with clarity and telling a story. Not just a lot a of empty pyrotechnics that characterize too many post-Coltrane players.

Joel Simpkins, So I understand. On the other hand, that's a pretty arrogant attitude for a sideman -- and the youngest one at that.

@Joel Simpkins, So I understand. On the other hand, that's a terribly arrogant attitude for a sideman -- and the youngest one at that.

Joel Simpkins , "Great comrades off the bandstand"? Really? Where did you get that from?
