Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Somewhere Trouble Don

Took him to deep water
Tried to kill him with a kiss
He said "Hey now honey
What about the money"
I said "I ain't got time for this"
Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
He said baby come inside
I said sorry I've got to ride
Sorry but I've got to ride
You know you could end up dead
Sleeping in the devil's bed
Sleeping in a devil's bed
Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know
Baby wants to drive my car
But he wants to go too far
But he wants to go too far
First comes love and it's so fine
Then comes heartache right behind
Then comes heartache right behind
My baby used to be so sweet
Now he won't come down my street
Now he won't come down my street
All my plans got derailed
He locked up my heart in jail
He locked up my heart in jail
Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know
Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know
Yeah
In Miranda Lambert's song "Don," the singer speaks about a dangerous and thrilling relationship that is riddled with heartbreak and betrayal. The central character is presented as being entangled with the devil's daughter, which itself highlights the underlying tension of the story. In the opening verse, the devil's daughter takes the singer to "deep water" and attempts to "kill him with a kiss," showing that this relationship could be dangerous and consequential. However, he protests and asks about money, emphasizing that he is interested in his own personal gain and survival over an intoxicating romance.
The second verse shows the singer standing steadfast and not giving in to temptation, even as the devil's daughter tries to seduce him. He recognizes that being with her could lead to his downfall and possible death, hence he chooses to decline her offer and move on. The final verse describes the aftermath of the relationship's eventual breakdown, with the singer's feelings of love turning to heartache and betrayal. He acknowledges that his former lover has changed and won't come to see him anymore, symbolizing the emotional prison that accompanies heartbreak.
