Es difícil encontrar alguna luz
Mas cuando quiero ser tu agua
Vas a beber a otro rio a otra playa
The lyrics to Mon Laferte's song "Yo Te Qui" speak about the complexities of love and the internal struggle that one may face when loving someone who may not reciprocate those feelings. Laferte starts the song with the line "Cuando quiero ser tu sombra, es difícil encontrar alguna luz" (When I want to be your shadow, it's hard to find any light), which sets the tone for the rest of the song. She feels like she wants to be close to this person, to shadow them and be their constant companion, but it's difficult because there is no clear path or future for them together.
The next lines "Mas cuando quiero ser tu agua, vas a beber a otro rio a otra playa" (But when I want to be your water, you're going to drink from another river at another beach) speak to the feeling of being replaced or not needed in the other person's life. Despite Laferte's love and care, the person she loves still chooses to go elsewhere, leaving her feeling hurt and alone.
Throughout the rest of the song, Laferte continues to express her love but also her frustration, questioning how long she will have to wait for this person to come around to her. I love you, I love you, I love you, with roots but in freedom) speak to the idea of loving someone deeply, but also knowing when to let go and remain true to oneself.
Overall, "Yo Te Qui" is a heart-wrenching song about love and the difficulties that come with it. It captures the vulnerability and pain that can come with loving someone who doesn't love you back, but also the power of remaining true to oneself and accepting the freedom that comes with it.
