Originally a rockabilly artist from Altus, Oklahoma, Martin is best known for writing the songs "Bad Case Of Lovin' You (Doctor, Doctor)" made famous by English singer Robert Palmer and "Cadillac Walk" made famous by American singer Willy DeVille.

Martin gained recognition in the 1970s as a pop artist and composer. He was given the nickname "Moon" because many of his songs had "moon" in the lyrics. He also scored two minor hits of own with the song "Rolene" in 1979 and the song "Bad News" in 1980 in France

Yeah same here..I remember Rolene & the air play he got back then..Very cool to see your Uncle receive the well earned recognition..Your Uncle is the reason I've had the nickname Moon for almost 40 yrs..My name is Craig Martin but as soon as John's mid chart hit Rolene made air play & people started hearing the name Moon Martin,it wasn't long before my friends & teammates started calling me Moon as well..

@@mooner2410 Actually I just talk to my dad about it and funny thing about the name Moon Martin is that he got the nickname because they always called his older brother sunny even though his real name was Howard, my grandpa, so eventually because they were calling Howard Sunny already, Johnny got the nickname Moon I thought that was neat as well I just now learned that from my dad

Matthew. I was Moons drummer from 1985 to 1992 . I recorded on Cement Monkey and a few others and toured with Moon in France . I lived close to Moon and we had lunch just about every other day for years . I’m so sorry he passed and was shocked to learn about this last year. I just found a few photos of moon and band in France.

I worked for John back in 1977-1978, selling flowers on street corners in L.A. He drove an old Ford van. He was a really nice guy and he loved to write songs and sing. I remember when we were in between spots he would sing some of the songs he wrote. I can still hear him saying "hi ya Sandy, hi ya Lisa (my sister worked for him too). It's sad to see he passed away.

That was my dads van lol his name was Chris martin he is moons (Johnnys) nephew, it was his van first but his dad sunny martin, which is moons brother, took it from my dad and gave it to him when he came to visit them in Guymom, Oklahoma because he needed a way to get back to LA. He had flew to Oklahoma. So my grandpa Sunny martin gave the van to him to drive back to LA. I thought that was pretty neat to read that you saw the van in 78 that was my dad‘s old pot smoking van he had in high school 😆

@@mattchu_caleb The old van was a powder blue wasn't it? I'm pretty sure it was. I remember that lisp John had so when he said hi to me it was "hi ya thandy" lol. We were paid two bucks an hour selling those flowers, or if we raised the price from $2 for carnations and $3 for roses to $3 and $4, we made more that way. It was long hours to us kids. I remember when I worked the "Terrible Herbst" corner (it was a gas station named that), I passed the time playing Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend" song in my head over and over, plus the RTD buses in the San Fernando Valley ran every 25 minutes so that's how I kept time. I didn't have a watch lol. The only photo I had of John and Sue, his girlfriend at the time, was in our living room, he was down on one knee and had a stack of money in his left hand, I lost somewhere along the way thru those many, many years. He was a cool boss tho. I was only a kid of 14-15 yrs old, I'm now a 59 yr old mother, grandmother and great grandmother with a lot of old memories.

He also had purple shag carpet on the inside or maroon colored he’s not sure he can’t remember which color he just knows it was a dark color lol also he said they were a bunch of spots on it because they had patched it up with bondo and sanded down the spots because they were going to paint it but they didn’t ever Get around to it lol So yeah I stayed that light blue color until Johnny took it

Interesting that Martin wrote it originally in a minor key (Palmer's is rearranged to major). Makes it somewhat foreboding and ominous. Love both versions

I remember watching Moon Martin performing this song on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert after he did his other hit Rolene. I was shocked at the time to learn he wrote it because I was only familiar with the Robert Palmer version. He's an awesome singer, songwriter, guitarist.

I guess I never knew that Moon Martin wrote this. I remember buying his Southwind band albums in the early 70's. He really floored me when Rolene and Hot House Baby came out. This is great.

Actually he was named Moon way before his music. I know that Wikipedia and the Internet says that but the truth is he was the youngest sibling out of his family. And his older brother Howard had already been being called Sunny Martin for years. So when Johnny started getting a little bit older they nicknamed him moon because his older brother‘s name was sunny already. It just went with it plus he loved space as a kid. So he had the nickname long before he ever made music. Johnny AKA Moon was my great uncle and Sonny is my grandpa he is still alive but sadly Moon passed away before any of his siblings even though he was the youngest.. RIP Moon Martin And let his music forever Live on through the hearts of his fans ❤️

What makes this version so much better is the minor key feeling. This version is haunting and more heartfelt. I think it was a conscious decision by Moon and Robert Palmer to change it to a major key feel to appease the menial tastes of the record buying masses. This version is just too dark and creepy for most.

Not to appease people and their menial tastes ( Palmer may have done that around Riptide, though I would still disagree on that) but to make an all out Rock classic. Palmer recorded what he liked, and proved that through his career.

@Nelson Robert Willis Moon Martin said that after he wrote the song and played it live for the very first time, the response of the audience was so good that he phoned his manager and told him "I might have written a number one hit."

So when his Manager asked him what made him so sure Martin replied "The Audience began singing along even though they never heard it before!"
