Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Murgatroyd Band's song "Magpie" are based on an old British superstition related to magpies. The song talks about the different things that magpies represent, and each verse tells us about one. The first two verses explain that one magpie is considered a bad omen or sorrow, while two magpies symbolize joy. The next verse mentions that three magpies represent a girl, and four magpies represent a boy. The fifth and sixth verses talk about silver and gold, respectively, where five magpies represent silver, and six magpies represent gold. The seventh verse claims that if you see seven magpies, it signifies a secret that will never be told. The eighth verse is about wishes as seeing eight magpies is believed to make a wish come true. The ninth verse is about getting a kiss that is associated with seeing nine magpies, while the last verse talks about "a bird you must not miss" when you see ten magpies - this is a reference to the rare sighting of ten magpies, and the association with good luck.

The chorus repeats throughout the song and is a summary of what every verse is trying to convey. In the second half of the song, the band introduces the word "magic," which represents the letter M in the band's name. The following letters in the band's name come after that, and the song ends with "Magpie, let's not pretend."

Overall, the song is about the British folklore surrounding magpies and how it is believed to bring either good luck or bad luck depending on the number of magpies seen. The lyrics are engaging and catchy, and the music is upbeat, making it a great song to dance to.

CLASSIC. The real, full studio version. Great memories. If you lived in London or Essex you watched Magpie, leaving Blue Peter for the rest of England to be patronised

@anonUK

I think it was nationally syndicated. Most Thames shows, with obvious exceptions, were.

Thanks for posting this! I used to return home from school and watch Magpie on tv. I loved this song and the opening titles sequence! This piece of music in my childhood must have been one of the reasons why I became a fan of rock music in later years.
