From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, "as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart."[1] As of May 2005 he has sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.[2]
Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given its Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early part of 2011.
In 2008 Neil Diamond scored his first ever Billboard number one album with "Home Before Dark", the album also became his first studio album to get to number one in the UK.
A Good Kind Of Lonely

I got to feelin' blue
I'm holey when you leave me
Alone, yeah
But in my heart I know
That you'll be back in, so
I may be blue but it's a
Ah oh oh yeah
I'm the happiest
When you're by my side
But there are times
When we must be apart
Then I just think of when
You'll hold me close again
And I'm not sad 'cause it's a
Ah oh oh yeah
A good kind of lonely
A bad kind of lonely
Is the kind that you have
When love says goodbye
Turns your heart inside out
Makes you want to die oh oh
But as long as I have you
I know I won't be blue
You make me happy
Just by bein' around, yeah
And when you go away
I'll never be afraid uh huh
I know you leave me with a
Ah oh oh yeah
A good kind of lonely
A good kind of lonely
The lyrics of Neil Diamond's A Good Kind Of Lonely describe the feeling of loneliness that he experiences when he and his partner are apart. When they say goodnight, he admits to feeling blue and hollow without her by his side. However, he knows that she will return and he finds comfort in the knowledge that he won't be apart from her forever. He describes this feeling of loneliness as being a good kind of lonely because even though he misses her, he is confident that she will return and their love will remain strong.
In the second verse, Diamond contrasts the good kind of lonely with the bad kind of lonely that people experience when love says goodbye. This kind of loneliness, he explains, turns your heart inside out and makes you want to die. However, as long as he has his partner, he knows that he won't have to experience this kind of pain. He explains that his partner makes him happy just by being around, and even when she goes away, he isn't afraid because he knows that they will be reunited soon.
Overall, the lyrics of A Good Kind Of Lonely describe the bittersweet feeling of loneliness that comes with being in love, but also the comfort that comes from being secure in that love. The song is a testament to the lasting power of love and the importance of having someone to rely on.
