Red Red Wine
Neil Diamond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that I
Still need her so

Red, red wine
It's up to you
All I can do, I've done
But memories won't go
No, memories won't go

I'd have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

I'd have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone

It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

Overall Meaning

Neil Diamond's "Red, Red Wine" is a passionate and soulful track about drinking away the pain of lost love. The song starts off with a vivid description of how red wine affects the singer, saying it "goes to my head" and makes him forget that he still needs the one he loves. He then implores the wine to do its job and make his memories of her disappear, but they won't seem to go away.

The chorus is the plea of a desperate man, begging the wine to stay close to him so he's not alone in his anguish. He then describes how it's tearing apart his blue heart, a poignant and powerful image that drives home the pain he's feeling. The second verse reiterates his despair and how he thought he'd be over her with time, but the memories continue to haunt him.

Overall, "Red, Red Wine" is a heartbreaking and relatable song about the power of love and the pain of loss. Neil Diamond's emotive vocals and poignant lyricism make this song a timeless classic that continues to resonate with listeners today.

2020 and I just found out this is the original.

Me to. I am shocked. I cannot believe that UB40, Bob Marley heard this and said "I can work with this" and did what they did. I wouldn't listen to this version for 5 seconds on the radio without switching the station.

Neil ,
I was moved to tears when I heard your original version of Red Red Wine just a few weeks ago.
What a performance.
It did not resonate with me in the 60’s but at age 73 it sure does.I have been listening to many of your songs again while sitting on my dock by a lake for the past few weeks.A glass of Rose and Neil and I have been in heaven.
You have entertained us over the years with your poetic songs and soulful voice.Thank you and” may the good Lord keep you in the palm of his hand “

I played this song over and over again after I lost my husband, while drinking red wine. Here it is now, June 2023 and I just learned that Neil Diamond wrote, performed and recorded this song. Who knew? I love Neil’s version. I love UB40’s version, but after hearing Neil Diamond sing it, I fell in love with the way he sings it. It’s a sad song and he sings it with pain in his heart.
