From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, "as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart."[1] As of May 2005 he has sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.[2]
Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given its Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early part of 2011.
In 2008 Neil Diamond scored his first ever Billboard number one album with "Home Before Dark", the album also became his first studio album to get to number one in the UK.

By a gal who only wants to play
He goes to a lonely place where lovers
Who are broken hearted stay
They call it
Clown town, clown town
No joy around town and you see
That's just where I've been stayin'
Baby, won't you come and get me
I can't take it here another day
It's not very hard to find
It's no more than a broken heart away
They call it
Clown town, clown town
No joy around town and you see
That's just where I'll be stayin'
Baby, till you set me free
They call it
Clown town, clown town
No joy around town and you see
That's just where I'll be stayin'
Baby, till you set me free
They call it
Clown town, clown town
No joy around town and you see
That's just where I'll be stayin'
Baby, till you set me free
They call it
Clown town, clown town,
Come and get me baby
The lyrics to Neil Diamond's song "Clown Town" describe the feeling of being heartbroken and betrayed by someone who only wanted to play games with your emotions. The singer of the song has been made a fool of by a girl, and rather than wallowing in his misery alone, he seeks out the company of other broken-hearted lovers in a place called "Clown Town." This is a kind of metaphorical purgatory for those suffering from a broken heart, a place where joy is in short supply and the pain of the past looms large.
The song's title and theme of being a clown are also significant, as it suggests that the singer feels like a fool or a joke due to his heartbreak. The use of the word "clown" adds a layer of sadness and vulnerability to the song, as clowns are often associated with laughter and joy, but in this context, they represent the pain and humiliation that can come from the end of a relationship.
Overall, "Clown Town" is a melancholy and introspective song that captures the universal feeling of heartbreak and the desire to be free from the pain and sadness. It is a poignant reminder that love can bring both joy and pain, and that heartbreak is a natural part of the human experience.
