Storytime
Nightwish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was the night before,
When all through the world,
No words, no dreams
Then one day,
A writer by a fire
Imagined all of Gaia
Took a journey into a child-man's heart
A painter on the shore
Imagined all the world
Within a snowflake on his palm
Unframed by poetry
A canvas of awe
Planet Earth falling back into the stars

I am the voice of never, never land
The innocence, the dreams of every man
I am the empty crib of Peter Pan,
A soaring kite against the blue, blue sky,
Every chimney, every moonlit sight
I am the story that will read you real,
Every memory that you hold dear

I am the journey,
I am the destination,
I am the home
The tale that reads you
A way to taste the night,
The elusive high
Follow the madness,
Alice, you know once did

Imaginarium, a dream emporium
Caress the tales and
They will dream you real
A storyteller's game,
Lips that intoxicate
The core of all life is a limitless chest of tales

I am the voice of never, never land
The innocence, the dreams of every man
I am the empty crib of Peter Pan
A soaring kite against the blue, blue sky
Every chimney, every moonlit sight
I am the story that will read you real
Every memory that you hold dear

I am the voice of never, never land
The innocence, the dreams of every man
Searching heavens for another earth

Innocence, innocence, dreams of every man, ah-ah
Every man innocent, every man, Peter Pan
Innocence, innocence, dreams of every man
Every man innocent, every man, Peter Pan

I am the voice of never, never land
The innocence, the dreams of every man
I am the empty crib of Peter Pan,
A soaring kite against the blue, blue sky,
Every chimney, every moonlit sight
I am the story that will read you real,
Every memory that you hold dear

I am the voice of never, never land
The innocence, the dreams of every man
I am the empty crib of Peter Pan,
A soaring kite against the blue, blue sky,
Every chimney, every moonlit sight

I am the story that will read you real,
Every memory that you hold dear

Overall Meaning

"Storytime" by Nightwish is a song that speaks of the power of imagination and storytelling, and how it can transport us to different worlds and dimensions. The song starts with setting the scene the night before, when the world is silent and still, lacking any inspiration for words or dreams. However, a writer and a painter each use their imagination to create a new world within their hearts by envisioning Gaia and a snowflake, respectively. The lyrics then go on to describe the power of stories and imagination to provoke joy and wonder in people's minds, and how every person holds dear the memories that stories create for them.

The song also references classic children's stories such as Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, adding to the idea that stories are not merely entertainment but a way to escape from the mundane realities of life. The chorus, “I am the voice of never-never land, the innocence, the dreams of every man”, emphasizes the song’s message of imagination and creativity.

Overall, “Storytime” is about how stories and the power of imagination can bring joy and relief to people's lives, especially during times of hardship.

Tarja: The sorceress
Anette: The dark fairy
Floor: The valkyrie

I like to think of them better as:
Tarja: The Siren
Anette: The Sylph
Floor: The Amazon or The Valkyrie
Each one related to one of the classical elements: Water, Air, Earth respectively.
And we are still waiting for the Fire representation that will be either a Sorceress, a Phoenix or a Succubus.
And once the cycle is complete, then Nightwish will disband. Never to return.

@Rients Dijkstra So true 😘

Y'know I initially compared the binge-listening experience of this band to neapolitan ice cream but this is a way better metaphor. XD

Without Tarja, Nightwish wouldn't exist.
Without Anette, many songs of theirs, which nowadays are so much popular among casual listeners, wouldn't exist.
Without Floor, we wouldn't have the greatest show on Earth.

Guys, it's easy to say that every Nightwish singer gave her contribution to the band.
And the fact is, that it's even quite true.
But before saying that Floor is somehow comparable to Tarja and Anette, who are both very good and talented singers (in fact they are still going on with their career, Tarja as a soloist, Anette with The Dark Element), please listen to The Greatest Show on Earth.
Chances are high that you'll easily understand why (almost) no one attempted an integral cover of that song despite Nightwish released the official instrumental track to sing on.

Anette got a lot of hate because she wasn't Tarja, but songs like these suit both her and the band perfectly. Although she couldn't do songs such as Ghost love Score, her voice helped Nightwish to evolve as a band and create a more complex sound.

@Noumenus Me too, started with DPP and Imaginaerum; prefer it over their old AND new stuff. Nothing against Tarja or Floor, just my personal preference.

Imaginaerum's style was tailored for Annette's voice, hence why songs from it sound best sung by her and not Floor or Tarja. For example, when Floor does Storytime live, I honestly can't stand it because it's an "Annette song" if you get my drift. Nothing against Floor, it's just better sung by Annette.
