And then there was you, my dear
I thought love was a game one would win or would lose
Until I found you
Until I found you, my dear
I thought love was a shame so I threw it away
And then there was you
But now it seems I was wrong
I just waited so long and I feared love had gone
And then there was you
The song "And Then There Was You" by Norah Jones is a heartfelt ballad that speaks about how love can unexpectedly come into someone's life and change their perception of it. The repeating line "And then there was you" signifies that the singer has finally found someone who has made them realize that love is not a game to be won or lost, but rather something to be cherished and appreciated.
The first verse starts with the singer admitting that they used to think of love as a game, a competition that one could either succeed or fail at. However, upon meeting the person they address as "my dear," the concept of love changed for them. The second verse paints a picture of hopelessness and disillusionment as the singer assumed that love was something to be discarded and put aside. Yet, the refrain of "And then there was you" indicates that the singer has moved beyond those thoughts and has found love in an unexpected manner.
The bridge serves as a reflection of the singer's past perspectives on love. They believed that they were right in thinking of love in a certain way, but the appearance of the person they address with such tenderness as "my dear" has forced them to reconsider their beliefs. The gentle melody and Norah Jones's smooth vocals add to the bittersweet longing that the lyrics evoke, making it a heartwarming song of love and self-discovery.

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
