I appreciate their efforts very much though I'm thankfully in a state that does cover a lot of this if you work for it.

Speech therapy has been more helpful and Occupational therapy has been extremely helpful. As long as the therapist is versed in OT relating to behavior modification and introspection on behalf of the child. Not just physical skills.

Our child has ASD..."stop, stop".....we do this when we forget...but you're supposed to redirect them and tell them what you WANT them to do not to stop.

Unfortunately our story of ABA is like so many out there...it was not for our situation. Our child is mostly non verbal but it didn't happen until sh attended public school. Before that she was actually ahead of some peers even slightly bilingual. At level or above level for milestones. But started to regress when we were dealing with homelessness. They diagnosed with ASD then she went to a special school program where she happened to regress even more rapidly during that time.

I had to quit when studying to get a clinical psychology degree so I understand the basis of behavioral psychology. However when we went through an organization to get actual ABA therapy for our child it was very bad. We thought maybe it was just that company but so many other parents had the same experience.

You can issue prompting heiarchies, and analyze behavior and results of various reinforcement styles without engaging in full-on compliance therapy. This seems to be the common way as Lovass with DTT that was more stringently applied based on if the child is doing what they are supposed to "or else" vs inspiring them to engage in helpful patterns of optimal decision making skills. Skinner's work was vital for basic understanding of this, helpful for getting started. Anyone can apply it. It just takes dedication and some research.

I'm honestly surprised when I see a child on the internet that is a success story of ABA. In real life the only children I've known of undergoing official ABA therapy for a significant time are more irritable and disengaged than the others that don't or that stop early. 😕

There's sadly no easy fix to these issues. I was looking for advice for how to more optimally help socialize our child but we've already been there done that with this.

I feel grateful to live in Australia that funds and provides services for children with Autism. My son is autistic and we were lucky to have psychology, occupational and speech therapy fully funded by the government. The early intervention he received made the world of difference

Thank you Ava and her Mom. A lot needs to be done to help these awesome children. I'm in a state that does right by kids with special needs. Honestly, it's the only reason why I'm still here. My youngest daughter is nonverbal ASD. She's 12, but has come a very long way from her beginning point. I've looked into relocating to other states, but the services in most of the country aren't up to snuff. I know that there are plenty of kids in the country (and the world for that matter) that are severely underserved when it comes to these services. Each little battle won is a huge victory for them. I have autism, I didn’t find out until I was 27. I wasn’t able to speak until I was 4. The teachers told my parents to take me to speech therapy and to have me test for autism but never did because there were in denial about it and it was taboo/ shameful for them. The only reason I found out about autism is when I saw a movie and than looked up what autism was about and I related to it so much. When I asked my mom if anyone mentioned it she than told me about this revelation.

@pineapple365 I may be a teenager when my parents told me that I am autistic, and for that reason I was in a hospital when I was 4 years old. I was non-verbal until I was 5. When I was 5, I learnd things extremely fast. I not only learnd to speak, but also to read, to write, to play a recorder (flute) and simple music sheets. At 6 I learnd to play organ.

I started to speak when I was 5, but - although I didn't speak very well, poor vocabulary - I tried to learn German. At 11 I tried to learn Russian and English (English is not my mother tongue, Dutch is).

Now I am 56 years old. I can manage a lot of things, I can drive a car. Driving in a very big city like Brussels, Amsterdam or Berlin is not a problem at all. When I am at the hotel, I am not even exhausted. I can think very fast; I can likely multitask pretty well, actually in the same way a computer does (to switch thoughts several times a second). I managed to drive a car, to use navigation and to chat with a passenger.

Unfortunately, at work my qualities are denied. I am just an autistic and my boss diagnosed me with a learning disorder, which is a lie. Someone with a learning disorder can't learn languages, can't learn driving and make intellectual progresses.

For those reading this, please be aware that there is a lot of controversy surrounding the use of ABA for autistic children. ABA can lead autistic people to hide their sensory or other needs in favour of forcing them to conform to the neurotypical world, and long-term can lead to PTSD and worse. ABA doesn't allow sensory supports, such as earplugs/ear defenders, sunglasses, fidget toys, chewies. It refuses to allow stimming, even if it's not harmful - something autistic people (and others with sensory needs, and even neurotypicals under enough stress) so to self-soothe in anxiety-inducing or scary situations (or when super excited!).

Am I saying families shouldn't receive funds for help? Far from it! But I want people to at least question what ABA is, and whether it's the best thing for the young person.

Thank you❣️I was looking for other opinions on here as I’ve also heard from other autistics about this. It’s sad that it’s like this. I mean I think many parents are just trying to help their kids and don’t know better/other option or can’t afford. But I can see this. I wasn’t diagnosed with autism as a kid but also ended up getting my hearing tested (no hearing issues). They didn’t know what I had because I was verbal, though barely talked in group settings. Anyhow, all that to say, it makes sense what you’re saying. It is exhausting to try to act neurotypical/fit in. This is essentially like learning to act like a character 😩 lol.

As a man living with it, higher on the spectrum, too much stimuli coming in is the hard one and not a soul gets it. I have learned to deal with it being on the spectrum and just going forward always. It is hard but can be done, for any that are that need that advice. I hate to compare myself to veterans but autism is a lot like that, you just hear and see and smell everything. Your senses are on overdrive all of the time and learning to tame them is the key and why a lot of what PTSD veterans may learn a lot from people on the spectrum.

I’ve learnt that from Carly Fleischmann, where in one video interview (she couldnt talk but typed out her answer), she explained to the audience what the stimuli were like, and also why autistic people tend to have stims. I was actually mind blown because her explaination was simple; stims are a form of output to cancel out or reduce input of stimuli in order to help her focus. Like how people twirl their hair, fiddle their thumbs or subconsciously do something “weird” when talking to others or on the phone, or when they are focussing on something. Just that the “stims” autistic people are looked upon as “inappropriate”.

YES I get it. my son has high func. autism, even when he was a small child I had to take him from a family birthday which was too loud because he was covering his ears. Home, serene, peaceful, him in his nice warm bath. I raised him according to scripture, love, common sense, discipline when appropriate, he grew up to get his driver's license and knows about electricity, loves to recycle metal items. The waiting list for ABA therapy is so long, and access to care in terms of transit is so terribly difficult. We absolutely need to see these changes. Every day, I see another case of these beautiful, brilliant children being harmed or abandoned, and it’s wholly heartbreaking. What can we do besides writing our legislators? So much gratitude to all who help provide a springboard forward to student-centered learning; the necessity for access to all is paramount.

Great they got the treatment covered! I think the insurance or lacking system find another way around to let early intervention of less severe cases fall through the cracks tho by making it nearly impossible to get an early diagnosis. After waiting 6+ months for a neurologist appt, only to be told “we’ll know for sure if he struggles socially in the teen year & has no friends”
Me- “holy cow, why on earth would we wait until he’s traumatized to intervene” as a single working mom of a special needs child after 2 years of specialist visits going no where, I gave up on external help. His outcome will greatly depend on parent/school supports, the struggle is real. Even worse, when your kids lower on the spectrum most outsiders assume their bad or your spoiling them b/c it’s not obvious your 5 year old sized boy is emotionally/socially at a 3 year old level plus the sensory stuff that sets them off no one gets. The lesson society needs in general is “other people brains are wired different, accept & respect that before you form opinions” I think the best 1st step is to meet them where their at with love, positivity, and compassion. They defy social norms, but are some of the most comical and creative genius’s amongst human kind. Some the greatest minds in history had the same challenges, I tell my son you not here to compete or be like everyone else. You have different strengths with a greater purpose when your grown up. By appreciating & teaming up others who strengths are your weaknesses and vice verses you form a creative innovation force around inventions your passionate about. When I look at my experience with winning business teams, a common element I observe is exactly this, very different minded people with collaborate and welcome new ideas. I myself am on the very creative side of the spectrum, aligned with the very opposite types of minds where we really seek to understand each other we and blend our strategies, the sky’s the limit!

I think some of these neurotypicals confuse vaccine injuries that mimic characteristics of autism, and autism itself.
One of the greatest differences is in levels of empathy and intelligence.

For vaccine injuries, there's none of that heightened sensutivity or high level intelligence. They actually regress in those areas.

For autistics, we're highly empathic, esp the girls and have high levels of specialized intelligence. Ours is a difference in neurology, and us actually nature's way of evolving this very stuck in it's ways homo sapien species.

My son is 5 with autism and started kindergarten this year (2023-2024) they put him in a “regular” class and I’ve been a nervous wreck the whole time. He’s not able to speak full sentences, and if you don’t know him it’s har to understand him. He’s very smart and his teacher loves him. There was a autism center that opened up in our town that he went to for a couple months and ended up graduating. I always find myself worrying and thinking of the worst outcome and really I don’t know why I do. I stress myself out thinking about it to much. But so far he has done great with a little accidents here and there. My boy continues to surprise and impress me every day. When he was 2-3 years old he was a lot like ava! Before he was born I never really knew what autism was. My son is a blessing and really made me step back and look at life and what I need to do to help him. Look up the educational website for your state there are other programs for kids with autism and they access kids different than the department of education psychologist it’s a separate program I’m in ny it’s called horizon but you can try and call whatever you find because your right the more therapy the better while they are young they tried to put him in regular school I applied to all despite what they proposed because I knew that he needed a program and I got the call
Last week so he’s going to a special program for autism within a regular school

This is what my little brother needed... he's nearly 40 now... back in the 80s-90s high functioning autistic kids like him didn't get any help most of the time... in fact he wasn't even acknowledged as autistic. They thought he might have been as a child and then decided he wasn't ... cuz he was too high functioning i guess. He got aggressive and impossible to handle as a teenager. They diagnosed him as bipolar and then later on as schizo-affective... and maybe he does have those things, but I now know he's also got to be autistic. its heartbreaking to think maybe he coulda been helped earlier on in life like this... and the system just let him fall right through the cracks. as an adult now he refuses any attempts people make to help. we bent over backwards trying.

Im in the Uk and have an autistic son, I was fortunate for him to be diagnosed. Which did take yrs of waiting, due to the waiting list but support from local council and his school helped to move him to a school for autistic children where its benefited him a lot. He's 10yrs old and still has his behaviours, but he is able to function an grow in an environment where it's better suited to his needs. His previous mainstream school did try but was not the best place for his learning. Tuition also helped him, to push forward also.

She is a social butterfly and has so many friends and the best part is she has the same teacher she had last year who took her from a confused kid to an inquisitive one.

ABA is fine. It teaches autistic children pro-social behaviors like speech therapy.

It may fight against what the autistic children’s brain naturally wants them to do, but that’s the point.

Think of it like a schizophrenic. Their brain may be telling them to do certain things, very bad things more often than not. But therapy, even if they don’t like it, will in the end help them come out better and stronger.

When I was in foster care I was in this group home that was extremely abusive and there was this twelve-year-old boy and he looks like a grown man but he had autism he was non-verbal he could only make certain sounds and he had an aggression problem I paid attention to him really closely and I listened to him and watched his body language. And one day he had a toothache and he was trying to tell the staff that he had a toothache he was in extreme pain and he was trying to get help but he couldn't speak the staff ignored him to the point where he got really upset and overwhelmed and went to stand up and the staff kept getting in his personal boundaries screaming at him to sit down that only made him escalate worse they started to manhandle him while he was crying I'm sure in that moment he felt extremely powerless because no one was listening they slammed into the ground really hard I tried to step in to stand up for him and explain to the staff what was going on with them they told me to mind my own business. And that whole event could have been avoided if they would have paid attention to him enough to figure out what was wrong. The reason why they acted the way that they did with him was because he was bigger he looks like a grown adult but he was a twelve-year-old boy and he didn't know how to deal with big emotions and he would get extremely overwhelmed and if anyone's Miramar trying to touch him don't try to push him away and then that will only investigate the staff to lay hands on him and then he's trying to defend himself fighting off the staff and he can do some real damage and the staff were extremely afraid of him which was extremely sad because all they had to do was listen to the poor boy attention to his body language he was even pointing at his jaw I'm trying to form the words hurt but the staff wouldn't listen. I really think that in schools they need to teach us how to communicate with people and how to listen and pay attention and how to be bilingual and learn sign language and know how to deal with situations like this so it doesn't get out of hand but regardless the staff were supposed to be trained and how to deal with this and they messed this kid up and I couldn't do anything about it

O wow.... I so get you on this.... the trauma of managing an autistic child's 4c hair. It's completely awful and takes us up to two weeks to style with faux locs or plaited braids in exchange for several months minimal maintainance..... and yes I as a white mum (coming from knowing nothing about afro hair) really want her to embrace her mixed race beauty not curse it... Ugh.....when Rosie was little I did her hair every morning which kept it easy to manage but as she woke at 2am every morning we had the time, yes plenty of time... but now I'm seriously disabled with fibromyalgia it gets washed in the kitchen sink weekly and finger combed daily. Incidentally I became disabled through through the trauma of my battle to get Rosie diagnosed and supported properly and sleep deprivation. Females with autism are too easily overlooked and I was accused of FII by the paediatricians so had to take them to the medical ombudsman. I won the case and am grateful that she is thriving now in specialist provision but my health is a different story to turn around.

I am an African mom, I struggle with my own 4c hair let alone my autistic kids. I have learned to do braiding using YouTube videos as no hairdresser would want their time wasted.
When I take off her braids I detangle the the hair with my own hands, then I add oils and avocado to a conditioner and do a pre- poo, she sleeps with this on and in the morning it's easier to detangle then shampoo, do LCO and next hairstyle please..
Her pediatrician was surprised she had braids and had all sorts of questions about my hair routine with her. She couldn't believe my daughter would sit down for that long. It uses to be 3 days, then 2, now it's a day's work with breaks of dancing and walks in-between.

Most (about 70%) of autistic people who have gone through ABA have symptoms of PTSD from ABA therapy. It’s very important that people are cautious and make sure that the therapy is not traumatizing to the child. If done poorly it can do great harm! Forced reduction of autistic behaviors is also associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety.

Also, a survey showed the vast majority of autistic people who have gone through ABA are against ABA.

This was why CPS took away our autistic child, instead of just offering us aid to help us care for our autistic child in middle school. They took her from us and sent her hundreds of miles away to an institution. Instead of helping, it caused her to suffer from failure to thrive. After the damage CPS caused, they then put her in a foster home, still refusing to return her to us. She is completely non-verbal and has recently turned 18 and has aged out of CPS. CPS seemed more determined to keep us apart, than to actually make our child's life better. Now that she has turned 18, we still can't get our child back because the foster home CPS put her in has hired a lawyer to get legal guardianship. We don't have any money left. We paid thousands of dollars on lawyer fees to try to get our daughter back from CPS. The foster mom has lied every time we've been to court; my husband and I suspect our child is abused. She cannot talk she has no way to tell anyone. Because we don't know where the foster family lives and without having legal guardianship, we cannot even visit our child, who has no way to understand why. I've started a gofundme so we can afford a lawyer to "help return our autistic daughter to us".

It will have to be a best interest decision. She will require an independent advocate at her age so that HER voice is heard she is now legally an adult. Advocates have ways and means to gain information from non verbal persons. This is important and of course necessary to have one who fully understands autism..Good luck.

I’m from Ireland and we have a school designed completely for children and adults with autism

I’m not autistic (don’t have a formal diagnoses yet) and I use to go to their off branch school for children with speech and language issues (which I have) they were good places and really cared for their students 💜

Canada is supposed to have great health care.. and here I am paying out of pocket for my son's therapies because the wait time is Years to get anything, which only covers part of one year of therapy. Then you're on your own. We are LUCKY, legit lucky, to be in the situation we're in now where we can kind of afford it. People are out here with decent jobs, both parents working, and it's still unaffordable for them. Yes these therapists should get paid, but the government should be doing more.

I feel you! If it wasn’t for my father with the biggest heart helping me with my sons ABA, I don’t know where my son would be right now in terms of development. He’s been doing ABA for almost a year now and the progress he has made is remarkable! Before he never communicated just (screams/ cries) but now he talks in full sentences and tells me his wants and needs. He’s almost 5. I’m extremely grateful for my father and extremely pissed off with our government! I’m in Ontario

I have seen some amazing people young and old with disabilities. And I will always advocate for them to have a chance at life . I have loved some amazing beautiful people with disabilities. Don’t do ABA look up people that had ABA on YouTube not one good video of people that had it. I and ABA I was degraded to the point of nearly killing myself. The best way to help your son is not get mad at him, care for him and love him like any other child he may not speak but his eyes will tell you more then speaking and he will grow to love you even more then a normal child loves their parents. Here are some of the greatest people in the world that had autism da Vinci, Mozart, Beethoven, Albert Einstein, Newton and many more. The fact is autism is a gift and should be loved, if you put your child into ABA you’re turning your back on god for trying to cure something that god made and something that cannot be cured you’ll also be making your child’s life worst to make your own better if you ever bring your child to ABA you turned your back on god for child abuse.

My daughter is 4 today for the first time I sobbed and sobbed because I can’t believe she still isn’t talking my hearts broken , she babies all kinds of sounds an she just doesn’t communicate she has no skills but started feeding herself, though thank god an I’m finally going to have the school district help with services. I’m just a mess I don’t know anyone who understands what this is like I’m just so upset I don’t know what to do 😭

ABA when done right is okay... But floor time is even better! Occupational therapy is so vital too!! Insurance companies need to be held accountable and actually cover these services. It would even save money long term in addition to improving quality of life

Like me I have autism too and my autisum will also give me terex and that makes me grunt quite alot and I'm so happy that other people have autism like me and some people like me have a disability and a type of way to communicate with you like me I speak scientifically sometimes not and because of my disability I get bullied because of the way I act ofcourse I don't care if I get bullied because of a strong independent person and no person can take it away from me and some people like me have to deal with it like me I always make a friend or foe and enemy it ain't my problem because of my disability I get bullied I still look out for others because I have a kind heart ❤ and a shout out to everyone that struggle with being anxious sad angry do what I do the 4,7,8 breath and what you do is you breath in for 4seconds and hold it for 7seconds and breathe out for 8seconds. And never let people force you to be they want you to be you can be anything you want to be like me I always want to be a firefighter but I won't be able to make it on the team so I'm going to try hard to be anything I want to be so please look out for others and be kind like I say sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me or you so don't let yourself get bullied so just speak to someone you trust and let them help you so take this advice and share this with others and always spread kindness and if you bully people just apologise and get advice to be kind like I do but I'm not a bully I'm a someone who helps people and give good advice

I lived in nearby Franklin NC, and they didn't have any psychologists or psychiatrists or even counselors in person I could go to when I had postpartum and when our son started showing signs of autism at age 2...I am glad in GA they are starting to push for better mental healthcare.

My child has been doing ABA for years incredibly exspensive so its good to hear people have an option to get help there. My personal experience it hasnt been very helpful for us and in my opinion some children will just naturally develop to a functional level with or without ABA. I feel you should attempt aba anyway as a parent try everything within reason that doesnt harm the child. And document or ask your therapist if you can record sessions being a therapy with some controversy behind its origins best to keep proof best of luck and dont give up.

Please stop aba. It is traumatising and just teaches autistic people how to mask, which is, hiding your autistic behaviour to seem more neurotypical. If aba seems helpful or unhelpful is based on the ability of the child to mask which says nothing about how they are mentally. Autism is not a behavioural condition. You probably have good intentions this just is not good for your child.

@EverHillsRanch speaking as an autistic person, aba is not the best. If your child is nonverbal, see if apps where you can click a picture and it will play the sound of that word work. If your child has major sensory issues (as you said), see if you can find textures, sounds, foods, and smells that your son likes that will calm him down. In terms of behavioral issues, I don’t know if what you’re talking about is appearing rude, stimming (including violent stimming), or something else. If you tell me, I could probably try to find some recourses for you! Also, know that autism speaks is an organization dedicated to eradicating autism and thus does not have autistic people’s best interests in mind. Look at what adult autistic people have to say, and I’m sure you’ll find a lot of stories talking about things they wish their parents did.

@Nathaniel Ward yes I work in ABA and definitely know there is a bad side. The clinic I work at is run by an autistic therapist. We teach kids how to use a device to communicate and advocate for themselves, encourage sensory play, and stimming is encouraged since all the clients do it when they are happy. I know not every clinic is like this which makes me sad. Parents probably have to do a lot of searching to find an ABA clinic that actually empowers children instead of forcing them to look neurotypical

Funny that there were no resources listed in the info for this video. Marcia Hines wrote a book called “I Known You’re In There” about her battle to get help for her severely autistic son. Her son is an aerospace engineer today who also deals with the public. He wrote a forward to her book.
