One mistake in your video is how you show the disinfection process with the coton.
You do the motion once , not several times. Doing it several times is a common rookie mistake and it just makes you clean the area with the first sweep only to reaply the germs on that same area with the second motion. Alcoohol helps but if you reapply the same coton on the same area you only clean something with something contaminated.
It's a mistake that makes nurse students fail their practical exams instantly.
You should at least put a small text to point out the error.

This was once true, but current practice standards at many hospitals in the U.S. (when it comes to CVL care at least) actually direct the nurse to clean the site over and over again for 30 seconds with a swab using a "basket weave" pattern. My former hospital is an internationally recognized transplant and teaching hospital and that is how we did it for the last several years.

Every time I donate blood the puncture site is stabbed for 30 seconds. The alcohol is cleaning the site, not just wiping it away.

Phlebotomist here. Just want to mention that there are cases where we need to draw arterial blood. Veins are definitely the most common but yeah we do still prick arteries

Interesting Mikayla. I know (or think I know?!) that arteries are deeper than veins so I wondered how you know how to hit an artery vs a vein please?
I am usually a challenge to a nurse (rather than a phlebotomist!) on my frequent hospital visits.

@George Alderson yes arteries are much deeper and they are also thicker and less bouncy. To stick a vein you feel for a bouncy, worm-like feeling and for arteries it's different. You can feel a pulse usually in arteries as well.
P.S. I also have deep veins and have a hard time getting my blood drawn and IV's. Sometimes people just have small or deep (or both🙀) veins and we get poked a lot 😭

@Mikayla Thank you for your quick reply. Yes I recently had an "interesting" experience with a junior doctor who was having all sorts of problems and was becoming embarrassed by his lack of success inserting a needle. Eventually the reg came and all was well but I was beginning to feel like a hedgehog! Haha

@Mikayla I feel your pain. Even seasoned phlebotomists can have a lot of trouble with my veins. Sometimes they even need to bring an an ultrasound machine to see where to poke. That also goes with IVs.
