Sinking Man
Of Monsters and Men Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold, dark sea
Wrapping its arms around me,
Pulling me down to the deep.
All eyes on me.

I pushed you away
Although I wished you could stay.
So many words left unsaid,
But I'm all out of breathe.

So, go, go, go,
Get out of here.
Go away,
Get out of here.

Go, go,
Get out of here.
Go away,
Get out of here.

Cold, dark sea,
Your waves are rocking me.
I close my eyes and fall asleep.

All eyes on me,
Your eyes on me.

Overall Meaning

The song "Sinking Man" by Of Monsters and Men tells the story of someone who is sinking deeper into a cold, dark sea. The sea is described as wrapping its arms around the person, pulling them down into the deep. This person pushes away someone who they may have wished to have stayed due to so many words left unsaid. However, they appear to have lost their chance to communicate as they feel out of breath at this point. The chorus repeats the phrase "go, go, go, get out of here" and "go away, get out of here." As the song comes to an end, the person closes their eyes and falls asleep in the water, with "all eyes on me, your eyes on me" referring to both the sea and the person they pushed away.

The song seems to be about a sinking feeling of despair or sadness that is compared to drowning in the sea. The person seems to be struggling in their own thoughts and emotions, feeling like they are drowning in them. The phrase "all eyes on me" is repeated throughout the song, highlighting the pressure and scrutiny the person feels. This could be from other people or the intense focus they have on themselves. The concept of pushing someone away and having regrets about it is also present.

Interpretations of this song can also be linked to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The sea could be a metaphor for this, as it wraps its arms around the person, suffocating them. The repetition of "go away" may be directed at the person's own negative thoughts or the people around them. At the same time, the phrase "all eyes on me" can represent the intense self-consciousness that comes with these types of struggles.

My interpretation of this song is strongly linked to depression and the symptoms that come with it. "Cold, dark sea, Wrapping its arms around me, Pulling me down to the deep" to me sounds like a person being enveloped by depression, pulling their mood, motivation, liveliness etc down, and "All eyes on me" as if the people around this person are noticing and watching their descent.

The following set of lyrics, "I push you away, Although I wish you could stay" sounds like even more symptoms of depression, such as isolating yourself from others, despite perhaps even wanting the comfort. The depressed person could tell the people around them - friends and family - how they're feeling, but they're choosing not to, hence "So many words left unsaid". The last line, "But I'm all out of breath", is in my opinion, a metaphor for the depression almost squeezing the life out of the person, pulling away their want for sociable behavior and making them want to isolate themselves.

The lyrics "So go, go, go, Get out of here, Go away, Get out of here" at this point sound as if the person affected is so depression that they're contemplating suicide. They might be distancing themselves from their loved ones, perhaps because of the depression symptoms, but maybe even on a conscious level, as if they're placing distance so that their friends and family won't get hurt by their departure. The repetition of the words make it sound more and more urgent, pleading, almost, conveying a sense of desperation - possibly driven by the idea that if their loved ones realise what state they're in they would stop them from committing suicide, which they can't bare.

The last set, "Cold, dark sea, Your waves are rocking me," sounds as if the depressed person is so lifeless, so empty, that the waves can easily move and rock them about. "I close my eyes and fall asleep" to me is a metaphor for the person closing their eyes as they die, into eternal sleep, to never wake up after killing themselves. "All eyes on me" are their loved ones finding them dead, and "Your eyes on me" to me sounds as if the depression itself is watching its victim - like a predator would look at its dead prey after killing it.

In addition to the meaning of the lyrics, the song itself as a whole just seems to have an aura of isolation. The use of the lone guitar, as opposed to additional other instruments, makes it feel as though it is someone is entirely by themselves, perhaps in an empty room or landscape; this adds to the sense of depression and isolation.

Longass comment but that's my interpretation of it.

to my surprise, i find myself coming back to this song most often when I am sad, depressed, or in the state of contemplating isolation and suicide.

I like your interpretation of the song, very well rounded and relatable, but don't think it only involves depression within the isolation.

At first, before reading your comment, I thought it was all only about the action of suicide and what comes after, but not the cause for it. Since the visual seemed to be the very drowning state of the person who decided to jump off to the water which let it drowned him/her. With this, to me initially, it made sense since the "cold dark sea" is wrapping its arms around me... (but not all cases choose a relating visual with its music). Other than that, I also think it could be just the flooded thoughts of negativities either by the society or by their own internal self-dissatisfaction of something.

The reason i thought throughout the song was about suicide itself is because it mentioned "all eyes on me" since the beginning, and that the person is "out of breath". This, I think it could be open to more interpretations like out of breath from trying... trying to talk to somebody... trying to make sense of it all that is going on in the mind and feelings... even though we all craved for someone or just one person to understand us or take time and effort to stay with us no matter how much trouble we put them through, no one wants to be left forgotten and drown in absolute isolation. Lastly, it is literally telling that they're out of breath... which is actually dying from the lack of oxygen..

This then leads to pushing people away by telling them to "Go.. Go ....... go away and get out of here," For me, it a push and pull feeling, that's why it's so long. But, in an agreeable sense, the person doesn't want people she/he knows to see them at that state of dying, drowning, thus worrying about them yet again. but also, it is the very sign that the person is screaming for help in their sense of the very least dignity. OR it was as if it is head versus heart... and that they are too scared to speak their mind due to them worrying too much about others, or because they fear not being taken seriously and put them into cut deep insecurities. This is, to me, reasoned by their earlier lines that they "wished" people "could stay" but then they may not act or say what they feel, or they're scared of people leaving them, so they tell them to go away first, before they do it to the person.

Then the last part, it is the last conscious state of the drowning person, perhaps seeing the crowd surrounding him/her because they found a dead body. And that very last moment of the person, she/he caught a glimpse of the people they care about or wanting them to care("your" eyes) before he/she actually died. This is when the song comes to an end and the visual of water bubbles drowning and the jellyfish goes further and further away that it became all black. "your eyes on me" and then ended.. got me feeling quite shaken. The tone that lowers down with the last word "me" made me feel like I'm stuck, there's no escape, and that i couldn't do anything anymore.

This left me thinking.. maybe it's not the best way to go.cos they'll eventually found out anyway.

This is the one song that makes me cry everytime. I don't even know why, it's not really a sad song, it's more a depressing song... But there is something about the way they sing it that makes me shred into tears once the song begins.

Tal B. The same thing... I drown into myself everytime.

This looks just like my recurring nightmares from when I was a kid, without the jellyfish tho. Creepy

I listened to this when Season 7 of The Walking Dead was aired. Cried at least for 3 hours over Abe and Glenn
