Cornwall
Omnia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the hound obeys the hunters' horn call
So I'm called back home to Cornwall
For that's where my heart lies buried
'Neath the standing stone
Where a white cross on a black field standing
Proudly waves above the landing place
Beneath the rugged cliffs of Cornwall, my true love
Broken images of memories awaken in my bones
When I do recall the land I left behind that was my home
Sailing out from Falmouth bay way back in nineteen-eighty-three
Green behind the ears, just fifteen years of age, well that was me

Like a fool searching for freedom, roving further far and wide
I set out but I did not return upon the running tide
Where the timeless cliffs resound with mournful echoes of the cries
Of fearless seabirds chasing storm clouds though the silver sky

From the all-night clubs of west Berlin to lonely Pyrenees
From chaotic squats in Amsterdam to New World 'cross the sea
From the forests of New Hampshire to the streets of London Town
Though I loved each place, I could not stay, forever homeward bound

Where the gorse and foxglove dance and sway upon the rolling moors
And the sea wind blow her emerald kiss from north to southern shore
Where a song of stone sings out in-tune to transatlantic waves
If I could but hear that song again, my soul it would be saved

When I die as we must do one and all
Send my body home to Cornwall
Place my bones down with my heart
Beneath the standing stone
Put white cross on black field standing

On my coffin then I'll finally rest in peace
Within the arms of KERNOW, my true love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Omnia's song "Cornwall" evoke a powerful sense of loss and longing for a homeland that still holds a special place in the singer's heart. The opening lines compare the singer's return to Cornwall to a hound obediently following a hunter's horn call, underscoring the irresistible pull that this place has on their heart. The standing stone, which serves as a central symbol in the song, represents both the singer's spiritual anchor and the physical location where their heart lies buried. The imagery of the white cross on a black field proudly waving above the landing place creates a sense of reverence and pride for a land that holds a special place in the singer's heart.

Throughout the song, the singer reflects on past memories and experiences, lamenting the missed opportunities and chances to settle down in other places in search of freedom. Though the song is also a celebration of these experiences, it is ultimately affirming of the place that the singer calls home. The rolling moors, emerald kisses of the sea wind, and the song of stone singing out in-tune to the waves all paint a vivid portrait of the beauty of this special corner of England, while the final lines express a desire to ultimately return to this place even in death.

Overall, "Cornwall" is a powerful meditation on the pull of home, and the longing and nostalgia that such a place can evoke even when one is far away. The lyrics capture the bittersweetness of memory, the poetry of place, and the comfort of returning to the embrace of a homeland.

This wonderful song always reminds me of beautiful Cornwall (i´ve seen the tourist bits but also a lot of pure Kernow with it´s amazing landscape and great folkmusician (e.g. in Cagdwith)). You put so much lifeblood into this song, Steve, that´s it become an aquivilent for me to "Caledonia", performed by William, Dougie MacLean & friends and others. A video of your own magic Cornwall would be very interesting.

Keep the black flag flying !!!
