TEACHERS
Omnia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met a woman long ago
Her hair the black that black can go.
Are you a teacher of the heart?
Soft she answered no.

I met a girl across the sea,
Her hair the gold that gold can be.
Are you a teacher of the heart?
Yes, but not for thee.

I met a man who lost his mind
In some lost place I had to find
Follow me the wise man said,
But he walked behind

I walked into a hospital
Where none was sick and none was well,
When at night the nurse left
I could not walk at all
Morning came and then came noon,
Dinner time a scalpel blade
Lay beside my silver spoon

Some girls wander by mistake
Into the mess that scalpels make
Are you the teachers of my heart?
We teach old hearts to break

One morning I woke up alone
The hospital and the nurses gone
Have I carved enough my lord?
Child, your are a bone.

I ate and ate and ate
No I did not miss a plate, well
How much do these suppers cost?
We'll take it out hate

I spent my hatred every place,
On every work on every face
Someone gave me wishes
And I wished for an embrace

Several girls embraced me, then
I was embraced by men,
Is my passion perfect?
No, do it once again

I was handsome I was strong
I knew the words of every song
Did my singing please you?
No, the words you sang were wrong.

Who is it whom I address
Who takes down what I confess?
Are you the teacher of my heart?
We teach old hearts to rest

Oh teacher are my lessons done?
I cannot do another one.
They laughed and laughed and said
Well child, are your lessons done?
Are your lessons done?

Are your lessons done?
Are your lessons done?

Overall Meaning

The song "Teachers" by Omnia speaks about the different kinds of people that one can meet in their lifetime and how they can all be teachers in their own way. The first verse introduces us to a woman with black hair, who is asked if she is a teacher of the heart, but she answers softly that she is not. In the second verse, we meet a girl with golden hair who confirms that she is a teacher of the heart, but not for the person asking. The third verse is about a man who has lost his mind and needs to be led back to reality, but he does not lead, he follows instead.

The song then shifts to a hospital, where the singer finds themselves unable to walk when the nurse is gone. They eventually regain their ability to walk, but then find themselves with a scalpel beside their silver spoon. The next verse describes how some girls stumble into situations that are dangerous and break their hearts. The narrative then moves to the singer waking up alone in the hospital with the nurses gone, wondering if they have done enough to please their lord.

The next verses talk about how the singer consumes everything that they are given and how they spend their hatred on everything they encounter. They then receive various kinds of embraces, both from women and men, wondering if their passion is perfect or if they should do it again. The final verse brings the story full circle when the singer asks if their lessons are done, to which the teachers laugh and ask if their lessons are done.

Overall, the song shows how every person one meets can be a teacher, whether they intend to be or not, and how life's lessons need to be sought out actively.

I'm a long-time Cohen fan, but I honestly prefer this version to that of the man himself. Where Leonard sang these words with a sad resignation, Omnia brings a feeling of anger and confusion - emotions which, oftentimes, tend to be the natural emotion when one is in the midst of some of life's most important lessons. In my opinion, the passion adds to Leonard's mastery, rather than detracting from it.

Ashodin Thorson

I like how they took a Leonard Cohen, gave it a godsmack "sound" with their unique twist. I love this band.

Zeith Queen

I love this version, it's beautiful.
