Drifters Escape
Patti Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, help me in my weakness,"
I heard the drifter say,
As they carried him from the courtroom
And were taking him away.
"My trip hasn't been a pleasant one
And my time it isn't long,
And I still do not know
What it was that I've done wrong."

Well, the judge, he cast his robe aside,
A tear came to his eye,
"You fail to understand," he said,
"Why must you even try?"
Outside, the crowd was stirring,
You could hear it from the door.
Inside, the judge was stepping down,
While the jury cried for more.

"Oh, stop that cursed jury,"
Cried the attendant and the nurse,
"The trial was bad enough,
But this is ten times worse."
Just then a bolt of lightning
Struck the courthouse out of shape,

And while ev'rybody knelt to pray
The drifter did escape.

Overall Meaning

Patti Smith's song Drifters Escape is a narrative about a convict who wants to escape judgment and punishment for allegedly committing a crime that he is unaware of. The song starts with the convict imploring for help from his weaknesses. He is being carried out of the courtroom anticipating his sentencing, which is about to be pronounced. However, he is still clueless about the crime he has committed. He says that his journey has been terrible, and his time is running out.

The judges and court officials seem to be sympathetic to the drifter's plea, and the judge even sheds a tear. However, the convict receives no reprieve from the mob outside the courtroom, who are clamoring for his punishment. The attendant and the nurse condemn the jury for their verdict, further intensifying the turmoil. Finally, a bolt of lightning strikes the courthouse, and amidst the confusion, the drifter manages to escape.

The song is a commentary on the inadequacies of the justice system, condemning its propensity to judge innocent people harshly. The song suggests that justice has not been served, and the drifter's escape is an act of divine intervention that saves him from being punished for a crime he never committed.
