Darn That Dream
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Darn that dream
I dream each night
You say you love me and hold me tight
But when I awake and you're out of sight
Oh, darn that dream

Darn your lips and darn your eyes
They lift me high above the moonlit sky
Then I tumble out of paradise
Oh, darn that dream

Darn that one track mind of mine
It can't understand that you don't care
Just to change the mood I'm in
I'd welcome a nice old nightmare

Darn that dream
And bless it too
Without that dream I never have you
But it haunts me and it won't come true

Oh, darn that dream

Overall Meaning

In Petula Clark's song "Darn That Dream," the lyrics describe the tormenting nature of dreaming about a love that is unattainable. Clark sings of dreaming each night about someone who claims to love her and hold her tightly, but when she wakes up they are nowhere to be found. She curses her dreams for giving her hope and for filling her with feelings of love and desire when the reality is that the object of her affection does not feel the same way.

The lyrics go on to describe how the person's lips and eyes lift Clark above the moonlit sky and into paradise, but she quickly tumbles back down to reality when she realizes that these feelings are not reciprocated. She laments her "one-track mind" for not being able to accept that the person she dreams about doesn't care for her as she does for them. Clark admits that she would even welcome a nightmare to break from the constant torment of her unrequited love, but alas she is trapped in this dream.
