Lucky
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my imagination,
I searched the starlit sky so bright,
In my imagination,
There I saw you in the night.

And on the day I saw you,
How could I help but realise?
My lucky star was smiling right there,
Before my very eyes

You are my lucky star,
I saw you from afar.
Two lovely eyes at me they were beaming, gleaming,
I was star struck.

You're all my lucky charms;
I'm lucky in your arms.
You've opened heaven's portal,

Here on Earth for this poor mortal.
You are my lucky star!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Petula Clark's "You Are My Lucky Star" paint a picture of a person in a state of imagination, searching for a symbol of good luck and hope throughout the starry sky. In this introspection, the individual sees the person they desire in their mind's eye, and they come to the realization that their lucky star has been present all along. When the object of their affection appears before them in real life, the individual is struck with awe and gratitude that their lucky star has been watching over them.

The central theme of the song revolves around the role of imagination, hope, and chance in attracting happiness and love. The singer acknowledges the power of the stars in the sky but also recognizes that the true source of their luck is the person they love. The lyrics depict a romantic and dreamy perspective on the idea of finding one's lucky star, which is not only a harbinger of good luck but also a source of profound joy and fulfillment.

Great JAZZ rendition !!

Pet would do these sort of standards as its what was expected.Maybe she'd rather have done songs that were in the charts-after all we're talking about 1960 when the charts were full of good songs.

I have an LP record that I bought in a supermarket display in early 60s when I became a Pet fan. Unfortunately the recordings were of bland songs such as this which sounded like big band singers not Pet's style.. Still have the record but never play it. - Tom B. Delaware via Brooklyn NY

Whoa, that crazy dress that you see as she’s walking onstage…it’s wider than her height!

The French guy she married was astonished (not favourably) at the costumes she wore on stage at that time. When they moved to France she quickly adopted a more 'chic' image.

There's nothing here to make her stand out from any number of pretty girl singers of that period. When did she discover that distinct vocal style that made her such an unmistakable sensation in the 1960s? It's as if Elvis spent the 1950's in a white dinner jacket sounding like Vic Damone, Al Martino, or a host of other cookie-cutter crooners closing out the Swing Era.
