Teasin'
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mummy told me she would scold me
If a boy I kissed
But I can't resist teasin'
Always gets `em, it upsets `em
But what can I do
'Cause it's all so new, teasin'

Now the good book says that nothing repays
The harm a life of sin does
But I must confide, we can't decide
'Til we find what it is that Errol Flynn does

Mummy told me she would scold me
If a boy I kissed
But I can't resist teasin'

At the riding school, the teacher was cool
And he seemed a harmless person
But after the ride he took me aside,
And was I glad I kept my spurs on

Always gets `em, it upsets `em
But what can I do
'Cause it's all so new, teasin'

There's a boy I like who likes to hike
But in no uncertain language
I refused to stop when he said he'd drop
If he didn't have a nibble at my corned beef sandwich

Mummy told me she would scold me
If a boy I kissed
But I can't resist teasin'

Now it's love that makes this world go round
'Cause we all love hanky-panky (Do ya)
Keep one eye on an Englishman
But you'd better keep two on a gosh-darned Yankee

Always gets `em, it upsets `em
But when day is done
Where's the bloomin' fun
In teasin'
On a moonlight night
When the stars shine bright

Somehow Mama don't seem so right
'Cause, faith, it's all so pleasin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Petula Clark's song "Teasin'" tell the story of a rebellious young woman who can't resist the thrill of teasing boys. While her mother warns her against it, the singer finds it all so new and exciting. The song suggests that exploring one's sexuality and breaking the rules can be more pleasurable than abiding by them.

The song's second verse references Errol Flynn, a Hollywood actor known for his swashbuckling roles and rumored affairs with many women. The lyric "we can't decide 'til we find what it is that Errol Flynn does" implies that there is some secret to be discovered about sexual liberation that can only be learned through adventurous experiences.

The song's upbeat, poppy instrumentation and Clark's charming vocals enhance the playful, cheeky tone of the lyrics. "Teasin'" stands out as a fun and daring song that captures the spirit of youthful rebellion and sexual exploration.

I love this channel. At last, getting to see artists performing particular songs for the very first time! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿฅฐ

This is the episode which I thought had the lost performance of the Platters singing "My Prayer", but now I'm starting to wonder if it happened at all. Although the song is listed as "My Prayer" at Historic Films database, the image grid for the song shows this performance of "Dance With Me Henry" instead (which I didn't know until I saw this video just now). Odd that the Platters would appear and not do one of their hits with Tony Williams singing lead at all during the show. I've been dreaming of seeing it for all these years, and now I find out it might not have even occurred. Ah well, if it was sung doing this show, I hope you will post it, and thank you for all the wonderful Platters videos you are giving us! I hope we will also get to see "Remember When" which is such a beautiful song.

After doing some more extensive research (going through old newspapers online, etc.), it looks likely that "Dance with Me Henry" was the only song sung by the Platters on this episode.

@Tom Smith Thank you for sharing. ๐Ÿ’– Do you know who the woman is that singing with them?

Tom Smith

@That 70's Girl You're welcome! She's Zola Taylor, the female member of the Platters.
