I know, but it's not just John. It's basically everyone in the film other than Jeff Goldblum's character "Donald Ripley". The opening scene where they are staring at him and mocking him based on his appearance is probably pretty accurate, but after witnessing what he could do everything would change. If someone had a tiny fraction of the abilities of powder....even without the telekinisis and psychic powers....they would be an instant multi-millionare, yet there is all this dialogue whining about the bank getting his inherited ranch, etc. And almost all of his schoolmates just have nothing but hatred for him even though in reality he would be an instant celebrity in school once they witnessed his talents.
So suspension of disbelief, which is an important ingredient for my palate, was lost for me in numerous and sundry ways in this movie, but it was such a powerful story that I consider it well worth watching and, yes, I cried like a baby at various points as well :)

@Jason Repa right. Movies like this always kind of lose my interest. Where the kids pick on, basically, a god that could lay waste to everyone and everything with a mere thought. And as you said, the kid would have been a celebrity, or a government experiment.

I dunno. I think for some there is an innate fear of that which is different, and which we don't understand. For some of the characters in this movie, it's the knowledge that despite his strange looks, and easy ways powder has something that they don't have, and that shifts their perception of the power dynamic. I think someone would be awed and amazed, and come to embrace him, but I fear another group would form that would instinctively feel a superstitious dread and fear from him; justified or not, and would do everything in their power to get rid of him. You can see a similar response when folks see a guy like David Blaine levitate in front of them. You and I know its a trick, but the look on some of the faces when he does it is superstitious dread, and they get away from him.

All it takes is a critical mistake that destroys their lives by their hands. If he truly didn't learn anything from Jeremy (Powder), it was going to be someone else, and that person won't be as merciful as Jeremy. People like that guy eventually pays the price. All it takes is one day.

Two of powder's powers are that he is super intelligent and he has the ability to feel what others are feeling. He can feel the deputy's fear. You can clearly see the boys are afraid when he makes the forks, spoons and knives fly around. John hides his fear behind bravado and aggression. Anyway, It's just a movie so don't take it too serious. But if all you got from John's character was that John is mad. Then you missed the point. There is more to John's character than he's just angry. You don't know how you would feel until you are in a situation. If some guy showed up in your town and started making weird shit happen. It would probably scare you too.

u tube clip right. not seen the film. so like what rational thing could another human being say after that scene. They would all have to be stuck in the zone of super freaking out. All bullying would be gone. Crying might take over. Thats poltergeist shit. I seen something like that in my house couple weeks ago. keys on chain hanging from hook. on table beneath 1 litre bottle of orange aid. I turned as leaving and caught the orange aid wobbling from max to max beneath the key chain which was also swinging. One way in the room and no one there except me.
