Early compositions include works for theater and dance productions. Randy played electric bass with several Michigan rock bands in the early 1980s, most notably, Third Coast. The 1980s saw the release of two albums of electronic music, including some serial 12 tone compositions. During the 1990s, Randy dedicated himself to the study of microtonal tunings and released three albums of microtonal improvisations and compositions in all equal tempered tunings from 7 through 22 steps per octave, and several pieces in the exotic Bohlen-Pierce tuning. Randy is an avid trombonist and frequently performs with the Metal and Glass Ensemble, a Boston area group that performs microtonal drone music on unique bowed metal and JI tuned glasses.

The plastic one sounds like it’s using a very gentle mute. It sounds nice, just doesn’t have that really crisp sound of brass. It makes me wonder if you could 3-d print a sax.

@Commanda™© probably not, because from what I’ve seen in videos reviewing plastic instruments it may be harder to produce a good sound. It depends though, I don’t think it’s a huge difference, I’d said if you’re serious about wanting to play saxophone try renting one for a month or so to try it out, if you like it look into buying a traditional brass saxophone. I’ve never played any plastic saxophones or clarinets or such, but it may (?) be harder to do some things such as bending notes or just little technical things. The plastic versions don’t seem to have quite as nice of a tone, it still produces a decent tone, but as others have stated it’s missing the traditional saxophone sound and feel. This is my personal opinion, but I’d definitely recommend trying to rent a saxophone first then if you like it see if you can purchase one, even if it’s a plastic one, you may have a better idea of the difference. Hope this helped!

@Commanda™© The first thing when you start playing would probably making sure you have the right embouchure. Then making a sound. Try to produce a decent sound with good air and good embouchure, though it’ll come with time. Then probably try playing scales. When I first started clarinet we started with the first 5 notes of Bb concert. Scales can help you learn the notes along with other things you learn along the way, scales can also be played in patterns like triplets, but I’d start off with just holding each note then when comfortable with each pitch playing the scale in quarter notes. Other than that maybe just look for videos that may have suggestions for when you’re starting saxophone, along with some simple repertoire. Also it’ll be easier if you know how to read sheet music and rhythms, but if you don’t you’ll learn as you play. So maybe look into understanding basic rhythm and reading notes if you don’t know how yet, but it will also come with practice. Other than that look online for different things to help you learn, remember to practice scales and always work on improving tone and technique, things that everyone always works on to keep improving.

both are musical and im sure both have places where they’re better than the other, although i assume it would be easier to find good places for the brass sax because most music written for saxophone assumes a brass saxophone

Im not much of a sound snob, but I can tell the difference between them, but only when side by side. Vibrato sax leading a combo? You'd probably never know until you saw the thing. Vibrato really elevated the plastic sax to the next level

I honestly still want them to make a Bari and Bass - lightweight ones would be a game changer. And the biggest upside? You can play your horn in any weather with the Vibrato

Both are fine instruments depending on the sound you wish to create. The plastic horn is muted, softer...I wish you played the same parts of the sony for each. BTW, plastic has to be a more affordable option for new or beginner horn players.

Acoustically the material of the sax contributes little or not at all to the tone quality; that is directly under the player's control and also very heavily influenced by the type of mouthpiece he is using. This gentleman is a true jazz virtuoso; Hats off to you!!

Less room for expression on the attack with the plastic one but I do like the warmth of it, could be useful when playing into a mic at certain venues 👍

Thr brass is more resonant, your tapers were clear and nuanced. The plastic was far less resonant and dull. The sound was there from the reed work, but the tone was not unlike a cheap recorder vs a bamboo flute.

Charlie Parker played on one when he came To play at Massey hall in Toronto. The story goes he pawned his real horn for heroin. They found him in the back alley passed out ...took him to sears and bought him a plastic horn.
The Massey hall session was recorded live using the plastic horn.

There is a difference. The metal one sounds more refined, but the plastic one doesn't stay far behind, I play Bb flat Trumpet and as soon as I find a plastic Trumpet that I feel comfortable with, I will buy it.
