Raspigaous est fondé en 1997 à Marseille, dans le quartier populaire du Panier. Après avoir enregistré une première démo, le groupe se produit dans les cafés-concerts de la ville. Ils intègrent la scène reggae marseillaise, qui compte dans ses rangs des groupes comme Sons of Gaïa et Watcha Clan.
En 1999, Raspigaous sort un premier album autoproduit, intitulé Chaud Time…. Le groupe donne une centaine de concerts. Grâce à un bon bouche-à-oreille, le disque se vend à 15 000 exemplaires. Leur 2e album, Chiens des quais, est édité en 2002 par Aïlissam et distribué par Wagram. Raspigaous figure sur la compilation Marseille Reggae All Stars éditée la même année par Polydor1.
