Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ravi Shankar's song Poornamadah are derived from ancient Vedic scriptures and convey a message of oneness and interconnectedness. The word "poornamadah" means everything that exists is complete and perfect as it is. The lyrics assert that this completeness is not diminished or divided by the existence of individual beings, rather it is the essence of the individual beings which makes them who they are.

The first line states, "Om poornamadah poornamidam" which means, "That is complete, this is complete." The idea expressed here is that the divine is complete and whole, and that everything that arises from it is also complete and whole. The second line, "poornat poornamudachyate" goes further to assert that even when completeness is taken away from completeness, everything remains complete. The third line, "poornasya poornamaadaaya," declares that completeness is indeed derived from completeness, meaning that everything has its origin in the divine completeness.

The final line, "poornamevaavashishyate," affirms that even when completeness is taken from completeness, only completeness remains. The mantra then concludes with the saying, "Om shanti shanti shanti" which translates to "Peace, peace, peace." This mantra suggests that true peace can be found once an understanding of the interconnectedness between all things and their divine completeness is achieved.
