Diving in a sea of lesbians
Cady is the new girl sheβs just trying to get it right
They ask, if youβre from Africa, then why are you white
She kicks it off first day, she thinks sheβll be okay
But she makes no friends
So she sits in the bathroom eating her lunch -
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Cady finds it so, so hard to concentrate in class
Why even care when you can just stare
At Aaron Samuelsβs ass
And itβs not all rainbows, not all smiles at Northshore High
Sheβs the new prey who tries everyday
To escape Kevin Gβs harassment in the hallway
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Enter the Plastics,
Karen, she likes her cousin Seth
Gretchen, with Toaster Streudel breath
Regina, the meanest of them all
She can sabotage your life with just one phone call
And you could go shave your back now Jason
(Shave your back)
The votes are in and they go
None for Gretchen
Four for you Glenn Coco
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Sheβs a Mathlete
Donβt give her that seat
Cause Kalteen bars is all she can eat
Sheβs a Spring Fling Queen
A Plastic
Who made army pants and flip flops fantastic
Home-schooled jungle freak
Who barely made it alive on her first week
And in Northshore, hormones abloom
At the projection room
Above the auditorium
Cadyβs on the brink, sheβs on her kitchen sink
With the fertility vase of the Nβdebele
A Frankenstein invention, deserves an intervention
She needs to be saved from the underbelly
(Shh) A moment of silence
For Gretchenβs gold hoop earrings from Hanukkah
Put it on the Burn Book, butter my muffin
Iβll get some lovinβ from this high school jungle, jungle
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Janis Ian, dyke (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians
Is butter a carb (x 3)
The limit does not exist (yeah)
Is butter a carb (x 3)
Diving in a sea of lesbians!
The song "On Wednesdays We Wear Pink" by Reese Lansangan is a tribute to the cult classic film "Mean Girls." The lyrics are a combination of various quotes and memorable lines from the movie. The chorus of the song pays homage to Janis Ian, who is a character from the movie portrayed as a "dyke" who is "diving in a sea of lesbians." This line is meant to be ironic because Janis is actually straight and is only mistaken as a lesbian due to her alternative style.
The song highlights the challenges faced by new students at school through the character of Cady. She faces several roadblocks like being teased about her skin color, not fitting in with the cool kids, and struggling to concentrate in class because of crushes. The song also touches on the harsh reality of bullying and harassment that many students experience, as seen with Kevin G's persistent stalking of Cady in the hallway.
The song's references to different moments from the film, such as the Kalteen bars that the Mathlete can only eat or Gretchen's infamous Toaster Strudel breath, all contribute to the song's nostalgic charm. The chorus of "Janis Ian, dyke, diving in a sea of lesbians" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the importance of standing out and embracing one's true self despite what others may think.
