By the time he reached adolescence, Robert knew his destiny was to be a jazz musician. He was accepted to the Houston's famed High School for the Performing Arts ("Jason Moran went there before me."). Post-graduation, Glasper enrolled at New School University in Manhattan. Soon after arrival, he hooked up with future bandmember Reid and vocalist Bilal, an old schoolmate. As an undergrad, Glasper gigged with Christian McBride, Russell Malone and Kenny Garrett. Professional life after the New School was even sweeter: stints with Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Terence Blanchard, Carmen Lundy, and Carly Simon.
The Bilal connection brought the pianist back to hip-hop. Glasper's contributions to Bilal's debut and subsequent tour brought him to the attention of Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). "Tip would come hang out at my shows, and one day he called me and said, ‘I'm doing this tour and I need you to play keys. Can you do it?’” He's also since played with Mos Def, and is featured prominently on Bilal's forthcoming sophomore release.
In 2003, Glasper's first album Mood was released on indie label Fresh Sound New Talent, and two years later, Blue Note came calling. At Blue Note, Glasper joins a jazz piano legacy that stretches back to 1939, beginning with Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis, and continuing through Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jacky Terrasson, Jason Moran and Bill Charlap. Undaunted, Glasper reflects, “I’m just happy to be a part of the Blue Note family and its rich history.”

I just called to say hi
Hi
I just called to say hi
I was just sittin' here thinkin'
Sittin' here
All alone and I'm feelin'
Since I've seen your face, yeah
And I wonder how you are
So I called to say hi
I shoot you a message, you answer right back
The first thing you say, it just makes me laugh
(I just called to say hi)
You know I always liked that, I always liked that
I just called to say hi
Now I'm thinkin' I hope that he sends me a picture
So I can see how he's aging
But I'm gonna send him one first
I picked one that I know is gon' hurt, yeah
I just called to say hi
Oh, ooh
And in a way, you're a picture of you
You got me stuck, I don't know what to do
And I just got one question for you
How are you so fuckin' fine after all these years?
How are you so fuckin' fine after all these years?
Ooh, ah
How is this possible, all of this chocolate here
How are you so fuckin' fine after all these years?
Now I'm thinkin' I need to see you
Get in your spaceship, let's take a daytrip
(Get in your spaceship, come here and taste it)
(Called to say hi)
The song "Hi" by India.Arie is a track about re-connecting with someone from the past. The song starts with India.Arie making a phone call just to say hi and catch up with someone she hasn't seen in a decade. As she waits for a response, she reflects on how time has passed so quickly and wonders how the person on the other end is doing. The lyrics are simple and have a repetitive chorus, 'Hi, hi, hi, hi I just called to say hi Hi I just called to say hi'.
As the song progresses, we realize that the person she's calling is more than just an old friend - there is an attraction that still lingers. She reveals that she is hoping for a photo from him, so she can see how he's aged, and she can send one back too. She talks about the memories they have shared in the past, and she wants to see him again. The song then turns into a flirtatious exchange where India.Arie cannot help but marvel at how fine the other person looks even after all these years.
Overall, the song "Hi" is a nostalgic look at the past and an attempt to reconnect with someone who meant something to India.Arie. It's a beautiful and sweet ballad that evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing.
